If I'm an Avs fan I'd want the compensation.

Good take from the trade board:

Consider that his salary for this year includes a $2.5M signing bonus even though there are only 30 games left in Colorado's season. So, he will be paid $2.5M + 30/82*$1,000,000 = about $2,900,000 in actual money to be paid. Making $2.9M for 30 games is the equivalent of making close to $8M over an 82 game season.

Colorado isn't a cap team, there seems to be an internal budget. Can they afford to pay ROR this much?

Stastny needs to stay on the ice. So does Duchene.

I forgot about the qualifying implications of the high salary in the second year. $6.5M = he'll need at least $7M on the next contract. That's high.

I don't see how Colorado could match this and come out okay. ROR will walk away in short order.

I'd take the picks and run. It's hurts short-term, but I'm not convinced ROR is that good anyway. Calgary's picks could be very high.

For the Flames: more desperation that will only prolong the suffering.

If the Flames get ROR, they don't have any picks for the first three rounds! Sounds like they're making a run for the cup, guys.

O'Reilly is only, what, 22? It's not like Calgary is moving assets for a guy on the down slope of his career. I'd be pretty confident that O'Reilly is a better player than whoever they would take with that 1st round pick; assuming for whatever reason it doesn't end up being the #1 Overall. 3rd round is even more of a crap shoot.

O'Reilly certainly isn't high end, but he's a quality player at an ideal age. Potential contract issues aside, I'd move what the Flames did for him without hesitation.

God this looks too much like Kessel to Toronto logic.

Calgary has an incredibly high chance of being in the top-5. Especially once they start trading away their vets for picks.

Seth Jones

Nathan MacKinnon

Jonathan Drouin

Aleksander Barkov

Sean Monahan

Each one of those guys could be the cornerstone of the future of the Flames.

O'Reilly? He's a decent 2nd line center.

And if it's not top 5 (which also happens to be a MUCH greater chance)?

Calgary isn't THAT bad of a team and they're playing in a **** division. They have a much better chance of making the playoffs than they do getting a top 5 pick, IMO. The assets moving in this signing do not compare, at all, to the ones in the Kessel transfer.

Rick Nash has 8 shots on goal and it's not even halfway through the second period. Someone's excited to be back.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: On Avs matching O'Reilly offer, one industry source believes it's a given they'll trade him a year from now.
Via Lebrun obviously.

I'm glad the Avs did it so fast so we don't have to hear about it the next six days. Again Feaster provided an avenue for a team in his own division to get better.

The Avs for their part are now completely overpaying a decent 2nd line player, 3rd liner really. Who wants out desperately and will be next year. This situation from both teams side is so laughably funny, so happy we are no longer either teams sad situation!

Benn with a vicious crosscheck on Jones.

Hope he's suspended for at least four games for that.

Dumb *** Benn, I have him on my fantasy team.

Lol at Calgary, what a great way for them to cap another night of the reminder of how truly inept their management is by blowing their big lead tonight!

Its ridiculous how CLOSE the entire Western Conference standings are

Besides Chicago and Anaheim... From seeds 3-14 are only 6 pts apart.

And here I thought Phoenix's attendance was bad. . . . .

watching the Panther's highlights and it's awful. Nearly completely empty on the lower bowl between the blue lines.
