Well, you know the drill, lets say Calgary is out of the playoff spot at the deadline and want to give Iginla a shoot at the cup.
And lets say Montreal is actually aiming at the cup and want to bring something similar to what Bourque bring to Colorado: a player able to rallies the team to one goal: a Stanley cup.
To Montreal :
Iginla
To Calgary:
Gionta - (The odd man out for cap purpose, Iginla become our Captain)
Tinordi - (Montreal's second best prospect. 22th overall 2010, 7.5c)
Webber - (The usual necessary throw-in)
Dietz - (7.0c Defenseman prospect)
Conditional 2nd (Montreal reach the Stanley cup final/Sign Iginla)
I would do it as a Habs fan if at the deadline i think Iginla could improve our chance to make the final to an interesting point.
Of course this is a negotiable first offer, i am waiting for Counter offer from Calgary fans.....
Montreal is giving their second best prospect for a player who's on the downfall of his career? Not only that, but said prospect also fills a dire need? Y'know, big, physical defenseman who can clear the front of the net and has a defense first mentality.
I also don't see why Iginla would go to Montreal, they're not a contender and to me at least, he'd leave Calgary only if he has a chance at it.
1. They won't take a cap dump in Gionta.
2. We won't give up Tinordi for perhaps half a season of Iginla.
3. We won't win the cup; Iginla needs to go to a true contender like the Pens, or could be great on the Sharks except for the whole cap space issue.
4. Throw ins have low value
So if we make it Collberg + Ellis + 1st for Iginla, do we have a deal?
(and taking into account that Montreal is able to trade Gionta for better value elsewhere)
I would probably try for Thrower + Collberg + 1st as I think Maatta + Kennedy + 1st that pens fans agree to is a better offer but I don't think that offer is unrealistic (but I also think Iginla goes for less than alot of the Flames fans do)
I doubt Iginla gives the OK to be traded to Montreal of all places, he's not getting any younger and as good as Montreal has been this season, I think its just flash in the pan. They'll be a great team in 2-3 years if they keep this up with Bergevin making all the right moves but I doubt they'll contend for the cup this season. Honestly, the only teams I see Iginla going to would be Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, or New Jersey

Well, maybe we can bump this thread near the deadline and reconsider it....
Thrower + Collberg + 1st is a bit much for my taste, we could at least make it a conditional 1st (if we dont make it to the semi-final, Calgary give a pick to Montreal)
I would not do it right, but if at the deadline i judge it would worth it, then we can find a common ground.
if CGY trades Iginla, they wouldn't want a cap dump in Gionta.
and can we please keep Tinordi? we're always complaining about being too damn small!
i agree...
plus Iginla would have some control on where he goes....He will want more certainty on going for a cup. Montreal and Tornot are surprise teams right now---i dont see them going anywhere in the playoffs.
Boston, Rangers, or Pittsburgh would be favorites. If they were to trade him within the conference it would be to a team they dont want to regular see next year (Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Dallas, Nashville)
What would they get.....
likely a 2nd or 3rd in 2013 plus a prospect. Sorry but he is on the downside of his career. Trading him 4 years ago would have been the smarter move and they would have gotten big assets for him.

so Iginla's value is lower than Kaberle to Boston?
Montreal have an elite goalie, young exciting player, balanced forward and defense, maybe we are not a contender, but Iginla could make us one.
the Stanley cup winner is not always among the teams people expect it to be.
Hot start or no, Montreal isn't gutting its prospect pool in a retooling phase for a rental. Even if that rental is Iginla. And we're not going to screw around with our locker room chemistry by trading Gionta.

This, pretty much. I doubt we're an Iginla away from being cup contender mode, so we pretty much has no reason to give up our 1st round pick for a rental

Without gionta having a bigger winger for pleky would make habs a better team.
Even tho hes captain, he aint doing anything for us right now but fill in
a spot as winger on the top 2 lines because hes a vet and hes captain.
Im sure plekanec as captain for the rest of the season would easily do the job.
if not, no captain at all with only 3 Assistants would be fine...
Gionta is leaving in a trade for a draft pick or for another player
like Cole was.
Bergevin and Therrien don't mess around anymore with players who don't
produce. especially when they're 33yrs old.
We don't need iginla anyways so why trade many asset for him... It useless ! Collberg is a great prospect and our first is gonna be a good me in a deep draft .. MB will never trade our first not this year so guys don't dream ! MB built in draft and won't built with ufa , why go for it this year when our core player will be the same next year and we will have more experience in our young player .. We can just sign iginla this summer and keep colberg our 1 round and Ellis ! If gionta and kaberle leave we will have around 20 million to spend in free agency...
We can sign perry , iginla , Horton , Ryder , clowe , semin , selanne , getzlaf , jagr , morrow , Elias , fillpulla , clarkson
All them play in a top 6 role so there is no good reason to trade for iginla now !
