I sometimes wonder if Tlusty was traded from Toronto as a bit of a nice thing to do for a player as his questionable acts as a teenager would follow him forever here - in Carolina he got a fresh start.
Tlusty was developing well and had a decent rookie season before Ron Wilson was hired. After that Tlusty wasn't good enough and was sent down to the AHL, where he played well but didn't get much NHL ice and was traded a couple years after.
Alex Steen was another player who suddenly wasn't good enough for the new coach. Both are doing well with their new teams and we should be happy the team didn't trade Kadri for nothing because he too was another solid prospect that wasn't good enough.
Wait until he can do this over multiple seasons. Honestly, grass is always greener. If we trade Bozak when people wanted him to and he put up the same numbers he has been, people would say we were stupid to trade him.
Tlusty was also a UFA two years ago after Carolina declined to give him a qualifying offer. So if the Leafs or any other team saw significant upside there they could have had him for nothing.
Didn't want to pay him what would have been required as he was coming off a poor season that required off season surgery. They signed him July 1st. He agreed to the contract so must have been happy in Carolina.
Jul 6: Tlusty (shoulder) has partnered with Tomas Kaberle, Carolina's new defenseman, for offseason workouts, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports. Tlusty, who signed a one-year, $525,000 contract with the 'Canes on July 1, has something in common with Kaberle, as they both were drafted by the Maple Leafs -- Tlusty was selected a decade after Kaberle -- in 2006. Of course, the Hurricanes have been awfully patient with Tlusty, as the winger has sustained several injuries in his young career, including a shoulder malady that required surgery following the 2010-11 season. Health permitting, Tlusty figures to be an energetic cog on Carolina's lower lines in the coming years.
No way leaf nation would have been patient for 7 years for him to develop. People were calling Kadri a bust after 2. I am happy for him. I agree that this is a small sample, but he looks more like the player who he was supposed to be when he was drafted.
