Kovalev possibly getting bought out

Harvey Fialkov @hfialkov
Kovalev will not travel and Dineensaid anniuncement is pending. Sounds like a buyout #flapanthers

George Richards @GeorgeRichards
Looks like Alex Kovalev's time with #FlaPanthers is over. He isn't traveling with team, looking 'at other options.'

This was reported last night by RDS (from what I saw on twitter) actually that the team was looking to either trade him or demote him. His salary was $1m and then he had performance bonuses that would take it up another $450K but looks like he wont hit those bonuses now. Demoting him would actually be cheaper than Santorelli either way as sad as that sounds.

I'm not surprised. I kind of feel bad that this might be the way that he'll end his career. At least he has a hell of a great one to look back on.

Put him on waivers and see if someone will bite. If not, demote him. If he refuses to report, suspend him. I wouldn't waste a buyout on this.

It's not like you're anywhere near the cap ceiling. It's a one year deal. Just buy him out and move on.

He may retire. That would be the best, right? Then we wouldn't owe him anything.

2 things:

1) I thought there are a limited number of buyouts allowed in a given season.
2) Buyouts count less against the cap but for a longer period of time. Why have a cap hit for him next year after a shortened season. Far cheaper to take the hit all at once in this one.

They can come to an agreement where they dont even really buy him out. They can put him on the unconditional waivers with the $125 buy out (yes thats correct, one hundred twenty five dollars) and then he's free to go somewhere else to play and the Panthers wont have to pay him his salary basically.

Just waive him

1) There's only a limited number of Amnesty buyouts. Those that don't influence the cap.
2) I just don't see the Panthers ever being an "up against the cap" team so it shouldn't be a problem to take a small hit. I do amit, though, I am unfamiliar with the inner workings of buyouts re: cap hits.

We do have to waive him anyway to do this buyout. Its been common practice actually to terminate contracts mid season. We did it once before with Adam Comrie either last yr or the previous yr (cant remember now). Its basically a mutual agreement to terminate and move on.

Here's a good description of how it works (happened just a month ago with an Isles player):

As I understand it, buyouts are pretty simple for players over 26 years of age. 2/3rds the value of the contract over twice the length. Meaning we'd have a $666,667 hit for the next 2 years. Means we'd save $333,333 against the cap this year and still have the $666,667 cap hit next year.

Borrowed from the Trade Rumors board:

Per Renaud Lavoie, the Panthers want Kovalev to retire, but Kovalev doesn't want to because he wants to get the money he signed for.

#edit# so that eliminates the idea I have of them agreeing to a mutual buyout situation. I'm guessing the next step is to put him on waivers to demote him to the AHL and wait to see if he refuses to report.

Haven't managed to see many games of Kovalev this season. How has he played so far? Awful, mediocre, ok?

Mostly non-existent. I still think he's a decent option on the point for a PP.

As mentioned, $125 waivers or a mutual contract termination.

Doesn't sound like Kovalev is on board with that course of action, however.

If he clears waivers, I'm fairly certain he gets his money from the Panthers. The question is, what do they do with him if he doesn't want to report to San Antonio*?

*I want NO part of him here.
