Are you serious? The guy played over 1300 games and had over a 1000 points in the NHL. It's a hell of a career.
That's what I was going to say too. Kovalev had a career not many of others can say they've had, Stanley Cup and all.
Not surprised by this though. Healthy scratch on a struggling team and Mike Santorelli recalled and playing. Shore came up and played really well too. It's time for retirement. At least he got to go out in the NHL if he is indeed finished. I commend him for trying for so long when he clearly could have retired a few years ago.
Panthers got what we needed. Someone who could hold the fort on the 2nd line until a better option was found. Shore stepped up and kovalev became expendable. Thanks for that great opening game. Enjoy retirement.
Basically this. Kovy was good enough for the top6 before Shore came in. He was really wasted on the 3rd/4th line and didn't bring the things you expect from a player playing those kind of minutes.
That's ridiculous. Because he had sweet hands people believe he should have had a Jagr like career. He was what he was and had a hell of a career. One of my personal favourites.
He was a helluva player when he wanted to be.
That isn't bashing what he has accomplished. But I remember on nights that we played the Habs, I would say multiple times "That guy could be the best in the NHL, if he wanted to" And that was coming from a rival fan, who only saw him when the leafs played them.
Consistency is what separates very good players from great players. Kovy was a borderline great but had consistency issues, like plenty of very good players.
I think at least part of the reason why people have an issue with him is that he appeared to lack effort and it appeared that if he would just try a little harder at times, that he would achieve greatness. He was often viewed as lazy.
His first run with Pittsburgh was great. When the Pens picked him up off the Habs he was not the same player. He had about two good shifts. Other than that, he was just there. I knew he was done than. I couldn't believe anyone would sign him.
Maybe he just wanted to go out in the NHL. Maybe he needed the money. Maybe both, who knows. I wish him well.
