6 goals and 10 points in the last 7 games for Thomas. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Another late viewing of the game for me. Talbot in the net vs. DiPietro. Nino is playing for the Tigers again.

Kreider started the game with Segal and Noob. Skating well at the start.

McIlrath continues to display good chip out of the zone passing.

Kreider scores on the PP standing a few feet away from the goalie on a re-direct from Pyett. Noob with the other assist. Very nice goal. Pyett deserves more credit for the assist than Kreider for the goal, but Kreider did a good job burying it.

Another minor on the Tigers. Pyett went coast to coast, pass to Noob who gives a very good pass to Segal who scores. Dipstick gave up 2 goals without yet making a save. TO for the Island Tigers.

Penalty on the Whale for too many men, served by Thomas. A couple of nice saves by Talbot.

Thomas gets a nice pass from Tessier, good shot, but misses by a little.

The team looks good so far. The addition of Mash, Thomas and Kreider made it much stronger. If it got Hrivik back, it would be a good team.

Talbot looks really square, really confident.

Haley and Pyett had a 2 on 1, but it was poked away from Haley by a sliding defenseman.

Klassen looks like very good again. If there's one person who deserves to be called up, it's him. He looks like a really solid defensive defenseman.

Yogan centers, but the puck goes all the way to the blue line where Vernace shoots it. Not a bad shot, but not particularly hard. Dipstick somehow gave up that goal. He looks disgusted with himself. 3-0 after half a period. Unbelievable. Carroll with the other assist.

There's a fan sign: "Kreider score a goal for us." He already did.

Kreider tries to do what Nash does, but he needs to realize that he doesn't have the stickhandling skills to make defensemen look bad. Should've just fired the puck on goal.

Talbot makes it look easy out there.

Very, very nice goal scored by Thomas. Mash wins a board battle along the Whale blue line, gives the puck to Thomas who drives down quickly, causing a 2 on 1. Pass to Mash who passes back to him and he scores into a half-empty net because Dip was moving towards Mash, who now is on a 4 game point streak.

Wow, 5-0. Dipstick gives away the puck trying to play it while being pressured by Kreider. Segal from Noob. No assist for Kreider, but he essentially caused this by pressuring the goal behind the net.

Haley doing a good job skating with the puck.

First period over. Obviously a terrible period by the Whale. Couldn't even get half a dozen goals.

SECOND PERIOD

Obviously Dipstick was pulled.

Scramble in front of the Tiger net, but Thomas shoots the puck over the net.

The whole Whale team looks really confident, really sharp out there.

McIlrath started with Vernace, but now playing with Klassen, they are the team's best defensive defensemen. That's a really strong defense-first pair.

Every time Thomas is on the ice, the Whale should be called for too many men because there are at least 3 Thomases out there. One man can't be all over the ice, there must be duplicates of him. He's just flying tonight.

Hooking on Noob. McIlrath is on the starting PK unit. Big save by Talbot on Nino. Good defensive play to take away by McIlrath, but the puck is stopped at the blue line on a clearing attempt.

Parlett looks great with the puck.

McIlrath is back with Vernace, who just gave away the puck. He has such great tools in terms of size and offensive ability, but insists on making dumb plays.

Klassen with a good defensive play followed by a terrific pass to Noob to set him up for a 2 on 1. If there's any justice in this world, Slats will give Klassen a two-way contract.

Talbot must be thinking, "what the hell am I doing in minors" because he looks perplexed that they are trying to score on him when clearly they aren't even breaking his sweat.

McIlrath saves a goal. Pass from one side to the other where Talbot wouldn't have the time to slide, but McIlrath makes a very good defensive play to save a goal.

Mash for interference.

McIlrath fights 3 Tigers in the corner behind his net and wins the battle for the puck.

Palm and Segal on a 2 on 1. Palm messes up the pass, so by the time it gets to Segal, he fires it wide because he had nothing else he could do.

Mash draws a penalty.

Jean is a decently talented player. I look forward to seeing what he can do next year for the Whale.

Bridge scores on a redirected shot. Not much Talbot could do when the puck is redirected from a couple of feet out.

Whale playing too loose now. Need to tighten their game.

Talbot needs to tighten his rebounds. He's not terrible like Miss with giving up rebounds, but he should make an improvement to crack the NHL.

Segal takes a penalty with 30 seconds to go in the period. Better not give up a goal now. Would be terrible to make this a competitive game now.

Beacon, since he scored the goal you have not mentioned Kreider's name. Can you elaborate on his play a little.
I love this part:
"McIlrath fights 3 Tigers in the corner behind his net and wins the battle for the puck."

THIRD PERIOD

Tigers still on PP. Diving breakup of a play by McIlrath. I really don't understand why Vernace, who's reckless with the puck, is out on the PK. Kreider is at the top of the pyramid on the PK.

Score by Bridge. A couple of yards out with a nice, sniper goal.

Penalty on Vernace. Damn, it can be a two goal game if they score now.

Phew, the Whale is back. The first period they were kidnapped and replaced by a good team, but now the sucky real team is here.

Bridge scores again. Holy crap. 5-3 with 12.5 minutes to go.

The Whale is just running around disoriented. As confident as they looked in the first period, they look just as bad right now.

Kabanov tried to put on his moves against McIlrath who played him perfectly.

Thomas with a very good offensive takeaway. Vernace skates down from the blue line in a manner similar to the first goal Leetch scored in Game 7 against the Devils in 1994, but instead of his own shot going on, Mash taps it in. Thomas with the other assist.

Kreider took a penalty. There's a team conspiracy to make Talbot's life as miserable as possible every game. I'm serious, this team plays like they hate Talbot.

Thomas with a take-away in center ice. What a terrific game by him.

Haley looks determined to make his way out of the AHL.

Thomas scored from almost the blue line, but it was such a hard slap shot that the goalie could do nothing. This shot looked like something Al MacInnis would fire. Even the commentators are now saying that one shouldn't try to get in the way of a shot like that. Pyett and Ferriero with assists.

Game over.

Might be a dumb question, but how come Whale highlights are available on NHL.com but not on their website?

STARS OF THE GAME:

#1 - Thomas: There were 3 of him, I tell you. He was all over the ice. His play, both on offense and defense was terrific. He looked like a guy who had a 3-point game. Could've had even more.

#2 - Pyett: also had 3 points and good in all three zones.

#3 - Klassen: calm and steady on defense, with some solid passes.

Honorable Mention - Noob: 3 points and good skating with the puck.

Others:

Yogan: good skater, solid shot, decent skills. Improved a lot in the last couple of months.

Kreider: very nice first period, invisible after that.

Talbot: almost NHL ready. Very good again. Square to the puck, quick, calm.

Parlett: solid and confident with the puck, but gives it away sometimes on defense.

Vernace: good shot from the blue line, good at carrying the puck, but totally reckless when he passes it. Torts would kill him.

McIlrath: nothing special, but very solid defensive play.

Jean: good size, skating and hands. Hopefully will be an AHL first liner next season.

Ferriero, Segal & Mash: decent efforts tonight for the AHL, but need more to make the NHL.

Palm: whatever. Nothing either way.

Carroll: looks good with Jean and Yogan, but those two are better than him game in and game out.

Collins: didn't mess up anything tonight, which is all that could be expected of him as a defensive guy. Nothing special on defense, but I will take this from him.

Haley: skating and carrying the puck really well. Reminds me of Avery a little.

Tessier: good, hard working AHLer. Had he been a few inches taller, maybe he'd have made the NHL as a grinder, but he can't at 5-9.

Yup. Even now, the forwards aren't bad and the offense we are getting from the blue liners is good, but they are just not good defensively.

Talbot is second in the AHL in saves, games and shots. He should go on strike claiming to be overworked and underpaid, as well as abused by his co-workers.

I don't understand why Kenny G allows the team to just relax as soon as they take the lead. Also, these minor leaguers should remember that their goal in the AHL isn't to win games, but to prove that they deserve an NHL call up. Keep playing, the scouts are watching!

I doubt that Miller will be sent back down unless he goes into a slump. He's playing pretty effective 3rd line hockey for the Rangers at the moment. I guess if they pulled a trade for someone that could also push him out of the lineup, but he seems to be making a strong case for staying

Better parts of the game: bigger, stronger, tougher, better reach on defense, faster, harder shot, crisper passing.

Worse parts of the game: Worse balance and small step scathing (quick turns back and forth, stuff like that).

Honestly, if he went to train with Barbara Underhill or a similar trainer during the summer, he would be a veey good NHLer next year. If I were on the Rangers staff, I would threaten and/or bribe him to do this. If I read 4 months from now that he is just chilling on the beach, I will pull my hair out.

Here's a question for those who are watching Whale hockey: What's wrong with Klassen? I've been trying to figure out a flaw in his defensive game. Obviously he isn't going to go coast to coast, but in what sense is he not qualified to be a defense-first NHLer?

He used to move like he was skating on sand. Not anymore, he's very competent now. He takes the body perfectly. He uses his stick for defense very well. He's always in position.

Every time he gets on the ice, you know nothing will happen, you might as well fast forward the game. Not exciting? Well, sometimes you don't need the excitement that comes with Parlett or Vernace giving away the puck between the hash marks.

Why is Klassen worse than Sauer? (Besides the fact that he plays on the left where we are overloaded and has only an AHL contract.) I mean it, what am I not seeing that's keeping him in the AHL?

Maybe Sauer's draft status? I would think someone drafted in the 2nd round has a higher chance of being called up than a UDFA.

I wouldn't say it's draft status, but maybe not being offered an NHL contract? I think not being offered pissed him off. The AHL contract was for him to push a little harder and get into an NHL form. I think he definitely should be signed back into an NHL contract after this season. Great s*** from him defensively.

Here's a question, Kelsey Tessier? Why isn't he on an NHL contract? I mean he's 5'9" but that really doesn't stop him from anything and has been scoring goals!

He's a mucker, and at his size might be dominated by stronger players. He's pretty fast (not like Kreider, but very solid) and in the AHL you don't see too many guys who are both fast and big, so either they can't catch him or they can't hit him, but at the NHL level, there will be plenty of those guys.
