Ryder is so underrated here, it's not even funny... Yet, if he was playing for another club, we'd hear all those rumors about how the habs should trade for Michael Ryder... Ryder and Gagné are not worlds apart, especially considering the injury Ryder had last year.

Exactly. The benefits for the flyers are the following:

Equivalent goal production: Ryder can score as much as Gagne with Forsberg as his center.
Ryder is cheaper: cap relief allowing them to get other players or sign their own.
Gagne's superior two-way play is compensated by a high-end prospect (e.g. Perezhogin)

Taking all of that into account, Ryder + high end prospect for Gagne = fair

However, Habs would probably need to add a draft pick because you need to overpay a little for a 47-goal player who is french-canadian.

That's the way I see it.

Right. Every time a Team Canada is chosen, Gagne is one of the 1st picked. Ryder is barely on the radar.

I like Ryder but he doesn't have Gagne's talent.

Gagne is overrated here . Ryder with Forsberg can put the same number of point then Gagne . Gagne is faster and two-way , but Ryder shoot is better than Gagne . Ryder is more cheeper .

Say that Gagne will got 3.5m and Ryder 2.7m :

Ryder + Ribeiro + 2rd = fair

Ryder : will put 60 point minimum next season , with 30 goal .
Ribeiro : will put 55-60 points 15-20 goal , 40 assists .

Gagne : can put 60-70 point with Higgins and Koivu .

Consider the interest of Quebecers player here , its good trade .

The rumor is also a sign and trade deal. Philly would have to sign Gagne and then trade him. Locking him up long term for you guys.

That's an exaggeration. It's not like being shipped to to St. Louis. He'd be staying in the East, in a major city, with a fairly strong team. Besides, I'm sure Samsonov wouldn't mind playing with Forsberg.

The point is that UFAs have all the power, only once or twice in their careers, they decide where they want to play and nobody else. The fact a UFA would choose Montreal only to be backstabbed a few weeks later would be a massive blow to our team's reputation among future UFAs.

It's true that I exagerated though, we might get away with only 9 years of being the NHL's new Syberia after this move.
