Poor crowds

I don't get the lack of crowds. Won a cup 6 years ago, been in the playoffs pretty consistently, and now leading the Pacific. Still, the lower bowl looks like it has 20% open seats or more.

Help me understand why.

The attendance has actually be pretty good, to my knowledge, but Nashville and Minnesota are not big draws here.

Poor economy
Stronger and older Los Angeles fan base
Jaded fans pushed away by the lockout
Majority of games played on work days

That'd be my guess. We have a strong fan base (at least 200k fans via Facebook) its just not everyone wants to dish out the money for gas and tickets if they can just as easily watch on TV. Personally I go whenever I get the chance, but that's because I live so far and I don't get many chances. I can understand the mentality of some fans who only want to go to marquee games. Keep in mind though that the Ducks at 20 years old are still a somewhat young franchise. I don't know how many teams as old or younger have better attendance. The Mighty Ducks also appealed for the longest time to kids. Not all of them have fully grown up and have careers yet. I think with another cup final appearance or win within the next 5 years Honda Center will be more rocking by our 30th year. It is annoying that SJS and LAK are louder but we still need to establish our legacy. We're almost there but not quite.

Attendance 15264 at Honda Center

Capacity: 17174

15264 / 17174 = 0.8887 100 = 88,87%.

Not a sellout, but poor?

There are quite a few sellouts. Nashville and Minnesota have a (well deserved) reputation for playing extremely boring hockey, and the Ducks get virtually no mainstream media attention to draw attention to the fact that they're a high scoring exciting team this year, as opposed to the train wreck they were last year. Thank you NHL/NBC for telling us all who the only real hockey teams are.

The economy is still struggling and most people had to cut out extras. Sorry, paying my rent/bills are just a little more important right now.

Attendance has been great for our standards so far this year.... We sold out against Nashville on Oscar night for sakes!

I'm experiencing the worst traffic I've ever had coming up from the 55 to the 57.... Took me an hour to get to a game a couple weeks ago... I take harbor all the way up now... 35 minutes.... So ya don't expect to see everyone in their seats until 10 minutes at least thru the first period

Overall it's been 91%, which isn't bad for a small market team.

I swear we need to go back to starting games at 730. I've noticed seats are empty at the beginning , but they fill up as the game goes, and by the third, it's barely empty. We're sitting at 91%. Poor is not the word I would use to describe the crowds.

Most of the lower bowl are season ticket holders, or NHL tickets. There are a lot of games, and not every season ticket holder is able to go to every game.

1) They are going to go the major games (detroit, Vancouver, etc.)
2) When they dont go, they cant always give them away, or do not wish to sell them.
3) When they are available for sale, not everyone can afford $85 per ticket.

I dont think it will change anytime soon until the season ticket holders start going more.

I think people are late to everything in SoCal. I'll bet a later start would still find most of those people strolling in near the end of the first period.

I'd love a later start. I get out of work at 6 at the absolute earliest, usually closer to 6:30. Any traffic and I'm late.

Oh, I understand there are some who bust their butt to get there on time like yourself. But a lot of those people who get there late seem to be pretty clueless about the game nor do they seem to really care much about the game. At least the ones I seem to end up near.

edit: Wasn't it Burke who moved the start times from 7:30 to 7:00?

They do season ticket holder surveys. Every time I've brought it up with my rep I'm told that people want to the early games because of their children. Not seeing enough children at the games to make that seem likely, but that's what they say.

Of course that may be because any time the other team has sustained time in the ducks zone I release a blitzkrieg of f-bombs. There must be a warning on stub hub or ticketmaster for families with small children.

Why can't we just do it at 7:15, and make everyone happy?

I have been a Ducks fan for years and watch every game on TV, but I just don't have time to go to that many games. I work until 6 most nights, and when games start at 7, there is no way I am getting there on time. I go to maybe 3-4 games a year. Opening night, final home game, and 1 or 2 games against "rivals" or other big market teams.

That's paid attendance, not actual butts in seats. I couldn't see the upper bowl, but the lower was pretty sparse. Granted I noticed it maybe at the 15 minute mark so I suppose it could be folks arrive for the 2nd and 3rd periods. I'll make a point to tune in again with a more sexy opponent.
