The Great One

I have looked through past threads and done a few google searches and have still not been able to find a definitive answer.

So here is my question: When did Gretzky first gain the nickname of "The Great One" and when did it come into common terminology as his nickname?

Thats actually a good question. I remember people just called him 'The Kid' when he first came in the league.

I think somewhere around '81 or '82 it changed from The Kid to The Great One. He was also referred to as The Great Gretzky.

I do remember in the '82 season that Mr. Big chocolate bars had a promotion where there would be a number on the inside of the bar wrapper, and if it matched Gretzky's point total at the end of the season then it could be mailed in for a prize. Anyways, the commercial for it mentioned "Mr. Big and Mr. Great". So "The Great" part of the nickname was already there by then.

It was after 1981-82. After he scored 50 in 39, 92 goals and 120 assists, and 212 points, when no one else on his team cracked 106 points, or 51 goals....it became official: he was The Great One.

Back in '81, he started appearing in ads for GWG jeans. "Great Wayne Gretzky" had the same initials as the jeans. So "great" in relation to his name got a big boost from that ad campaign.

I have a feeling that the exact nickname may have been from a commercial.

The above poster who said 1982 is probably correct. You know, it is just one of those things with him, you just remember it being around forever. Sort of like the "Rocket" (would probably be even harder to find the origins of that nickname).

During the 1979-1980 season, he was already being referred to as "The Great Gretzky."

"The Great One" may have started a year or two later.
