Week of February 25th - March 3rd: Sunday 'post-game' Papers

Sunday, March 3rd Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Man (dis)advantage could keep Jets from postseason. The talk from prior to the game and even more so following the lackluster loss, was the lack of power play prowess that continues to snakebite the Jets. Winnipeg is clicking at 14.3% this season which ties them with Nashville for 23rd in the NHL. Not good enough if you want to compete with the elite teams in the East.

Winnipeg Free Press: Laughter the best medicine for Noel. The woeful Jets PP must be causing coach Noel and special teams coach Perry Pearn fits as they attempt to get this back on track. We will have more on the Jets PP woes later this afternoon.

Winnipeg Free Press: So much for win streak. These Jets are not the Chicago Blackhawks so you knew the streak would end eventually but I suspect many thought it would end in closer fashion. Perhaps a 2-1 loss with the second goal coming late in the 3rd versus a 3-0 loss.

Winnipeg Free Press: Wheeler shakes off pain, Jets breathe sigh of relief. Watching the winger writhe in pain on the ice after taking a slap shot to the leg, the 15,004 assembled fans in the MTS Centre held their breath and the goal the Caps scored with Wheeler down seemed trivial. He later tested the leg out and almost immediately went back to the bench which didn’t look good for business. However he returned to play much to the relief of Jets fans who know this team can ill afford to lose him.

Winnipeg Free Press: Bellicose Bogo won’t take guff. After the big (but clean) hit int he corner, you got the sense that Perreault was going to retaliate in some fashion. Of course as they were skating back to the bench he gave Bogosian a slash to the back of the leg, which was reciprocated with fists.

Winnipeg Sun: No power in the power play. The talk of the town is the Jets inability to score on the PP.

Winnipeg Sun: Anthony Peluso gives Winnipeg Jets a fighting chance. A good tilt as the Jets heavyweight took on and defeated the former member of the Manitoba Moose. Kirk also touches on Jets ahead of schedule, coach Noel post-game presser, last time Jets were blanked, road trip desperation, Blake Wheeler’s toughness and Thorburn’s gain.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets give us that sinking feeling again. It was what it was, which in this case was a let down. Despite taking the majority of shots the quality of same left a lot to be desired. It was just one of those games and unfortunately, one the Jets will have to forget quickly as they head to Florida to take on the Panthers twice (Tuesday & Friday) and the Bolts once (Thursday) in the next week.

Winnipeg Sun: Winkler’s Fehr makes Capital gain on Jets. You could tell that this win was special for the former member of the Jets.

TSN: Streaky Jets come up empty against Capitals. It just felt like one of those games. Similar to the 1-0 loss that the Jets suffered to the Capitals last season when Ovechkin scored with just over a minute to go in the 3rd. Time to start a new streak in Del Boca Vista Phase III.

Jets on a Deadline – Capitals 3 Jets 0:

Winnipeg Jets: Zach Bogosian, Evander Kane, Ondrej Pavelec, Mark Stuart.

Coach Noel post-game presser: Following the loss, Coach Noel met with the media.

Washington Capitals: Coach Oates, Braden Holtby and Eric Fehr.

Illegal Curve Post-game podcast from the Press box: Guest Host Michael Remis and Analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Capitals.

Jets on a Deadline: Game recaps, post-game audio, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

TSN: Jones makes 37 saves, Monarchs down IceCaps. St. John’s continue to struggle as they drop their second in as many nights to the Monarchs.

Monday Papers

Monday Papers, February 25th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news

Jets news:

Illegal Curve: Statement from the Redmond family. The family of injured Jets defenceman Zach Redmond released a statement via the Jets today.

CBC: Judging the Jets -- 100 games after their return to Winnipeg. Hardly seems like we have already experienced 100 Jets games since the return of NHL hockey to the Manitoba capital. What would you like to see, re-building on the fly or blowing up the core?

Winnipeg Free Press: Bad luck plagues Miettinen. He last just 17 seconds before he had to leave the game and following the Jets win, was labeled as ‘day to day’ by head coach Claude Noel. When further pressed about the injury coach Noel said it occurred in “an uncomfortable area”. Hopefully Miettinen is ok. Ed also talks about the review process, Peluso’s play and becoming road warriors.

Winnipeg Free Press: No longer dropping any road apples. While the Jets have improved a dismal road record from last season they still have a lot of room for improvement. They seem incapable of pressing following a goal and often give up a quality chance soon thereafter. It has been due to the stellar play of Ondrej Pavelec that they have been able to maintain these leads.

Winnipeg Sun: When will Winnipeg Jets start winning at home? Now that the Jets are winning on the road and struggling at home the soul searching will begin. Kirk also looks at Peluso’s tilt, Miettinen’s injury, quick starts to game, Hainsey the workhorse, less missed shots, Jokinen’s scare and more.

Winnipeg Sun: Scammed Jets fan back in the game. Awesome to see the kindness of strangers. Really puts the Friendly in Friendly Manitoba.

TSN: Special teams help Jets in win over Devils. Successful penalty killing and scoring during the power play will wonders never cease. Even more importantly the Jets minimized the opportunities they gave the Devils.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline – Jets 4 Devils 2. Game recaps, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Illegal Curve: Proposed Realignment puts Winnipeg Jets in Conference 3. On CBC”s Satellite Hotstove, Elliotte Friedman revealed the newest version of this year’s proposed realignment.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

Toronto Star: Marlies beat IceCaps. It was a second period to forget for St. John’s. They gave up five goals to Toronto and that was the difference in the game.

Tri-City Americans: Tri-City routs Edmonton. The Jets fourth round pick Zachary Yuen had a goal and an assist as he helped his team destroy the Oil Kings on Saturday. Next up are the Portland Winterhawks on Tuesday, the 26th.

NHL news:

Chicago Sun-Times: Corey Crawford’s shutout extends Blackhawks’ NHL record to 18. I caught the end of the game and the Hawks were able to hold on despite a full course press by the Bluejackets.

Boston Herald: Bruins off to best start in 36 years. Jets fans can thank Boston after the B’s swept the two Florida teams over the weekend.

Pittsburgh Tribune: Malkin has short-term memory loss. It was a horrible crash into the boards and Penguins fan have to hope he will make a full recovery.

NHL.com: No Supplemental Discipline for Pacioretty. The Jets next opponents (NYR) will not be happy that there was no further disciplinary action.

Illegal Curve Hockey Replay:

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday Papers, February 26th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in this afternoon’s contest. You can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Bogosian).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Kane silencing doubters, on road to superstardom. The 30 goal scorer is a proven commodity and is clearly the Jets best scorer night in and night out. It seems clear that coach Noel is giving him more and more responsibility and the young gun is thriving under this trust.

Winnipeg Free Press: Wear, tear could be taking toll on Big Buff. Could be injury or could be coach Noel trying to manage one of his best players during this short sprint of a season.

Winnipeg Free Press: They’ll never fuggedaboutit. While there was a lot of doubt about Wright, he has gotten better almost every game he has played. Of course both he and Peluso are fairly minimal impact guys but they have character and coach Noel has rewarded their hard work.

Winnipeg Sun: Best players are playing like their best players. Across the board the team has been getting contributions from everyone. Captain Ladd has led by example and the team is following along to the delight of coach Noel.

Winnipeg Sun: Anthony Peluso earns more playing time with solid contribution. There was plenty of irony seeing Anthony Peluso pummeling someone with the same hands he used to help save Zach Redmond’s life. Coach Noel liked what he saw and it appears that Peluso has earned more playing time.

Winnipeg Sun: Playing at Madison Square Garden still something special. A number of New York born players will be enjoying the return to MSG. Additionally it will also be special for all the transplanted Winnipeggers in the crowd.

Winnipeg Sun: Byfuglien back on ice Monday morning. Best news Jets fans received after seeing the disturbing image of a stationary Buff following the awkward way he went into in the boards in New Jersey.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets fans feel the same after lockout. Cannot say I am the least bit surprised by the conclusion they draw.

Illegal Curve: Statement from the Redmond family. The family appreciates all the warm sentiment and well wishes but are asking for privacy to allow Zach to heal following the horrific injury.

Jets opposition (New York Rangers) news:

New York Times: Rangers Mum on Status of Nash and McDonagh. Like a number of other teams, the NYR are dealing with some serious injuries right now. The good news for Blueshirt fans is that they will have a number of players returning tonight against the Jets.

New York Daily News: Torts says not time to his panic button yet. Torts seemed remarkably calm all things considered.

NHL news:

Chicago Tribune: Hossa makes Hawks a winner. Is this team real? Apparently they are and Hossa scored a beauty in OT to give Chicagi the win over Edmonton to extend their streak to 19 games.

San Jose Mercury News: NHL says Clowe made a legal line change, still suspends him. This is one of those rulings that makes you scratch your head. If legal, why the suspension?

Globe and Mail: Challenge flag coming to NHL? While you want to ensure accuracy in the calls on the ice, you need to also be aware of time delays that this heightened accuracy can create.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, February 27th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news

Note: Tune into NHL Mid-Week with Illegal Curve Hockey tonight on TSN Radio 1290 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Guests: Brad Treliving (Coyotes Assistant GM) & Dan Wood (Anaheim Ducks analyst).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Kane adds to point streak, Noel impressed by ‘dangerous’ play. He has the best streak going in the NHL and he will look to continue that success at home on Thursday. Jets fans have to be happy with the play of their young gun.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets have started to figure it all out. The Jets played a heavy game in NY and aside from a flurry at the end of the game, played an extremely impressive game considering it was their fifth game in nine days. They left the Peg’ with a lot of skepticism from fans that this group could not get it done and they really got it together. They have two important games at home before heading back on the road for three in Del Boca Vista aka Florida.

Winnipeg Free Press: Rolling in New York. Have the Jets finally earned the title Road Warriors?

CBC: Call off the coroner, the Jets are alive. It really would be funny to see the cross section of newspaper headlines throughout this season. One day the Jets cannot beat themselves and the next they are unstoppable. Coach Noel seems resigned to this reality as he tries to maintain the focus on each game and not get too high or too low following a win or a loss.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets close out road trip with win over Rangers. At points the team looked very tired but considering they played five games in nine days and finished with four wins, that is completely understandable. Ken has all the post game video reaction from coach Noel, Evander Kane, Ondrej Pavelec, Olli Jokinen and Anthony Peluso.

Winnipeg Sun: Playoffs may not a pipe dream. While it is usually a good idea to try and curb our enthusiasm going four and one on this tough road trip has people in this city talking playoffs. Now before we go planning any parades down Portage Avenue, the Jets remain 9th in the Eastern Conference but are however in a three way tie for 1st in the Southeast division. So what do you think? Do the Jets make the playoffs this season? Paul also covers performance at MSG, karma, improved PK, end of Torts?, Callahan’s character and the realignment talk.

Winnipeg Sun: Players like look of NHL realignment plan. Captain Ladd says he is a fan of the new alignment. CBC’s Elliotte Friedman broke the details on Saturday’s Hot Stove and the playoff structure was further discussed by TSN’s Bob McKenzie and ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun. Here is a link to a post we did which lays out all of the above.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline – Jets 4 Rangers 3. Game recaps, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets affiliate (IceCaps) and prospect news:

TSN: Beaulieu’s pair of goals leads Bulldogs past IceCaps. One of the few defenceman left on The Rock, Derek Meech was unable to lead his team to victory.

Swift Current site: Broncos at Brandon Wheat Kings preview. Jets prospect Adam Lowry is five away from achieving 200 points in the WHL. Game starts at 7 pm tonight in Brandon.

Jets next opponent (New Jersey Devils) news:

The Record: Brodeur placed on IR, out at least until Monday. Looks like Jets fans will be seeing the Moose (Johan Hedberg) who played for the Manitoba Moose, on Thursday night.

Star-Ledger: Travis Zajac hoping for a memorable homecoming in Winnipeg. He missed both chances to play in Winnipeg last season due to injury but will have 30-40 family members in the crowd on Thursday as his suddenly struggling Devils take on the Jets.

NHL news:

CBC: Habs trade Cole to Stars for Ryder. Both teams seem to be happy with the player they are getting in exchange to help fill a need.

Globe and Mail: Proposed NHL realignment creates competitive inequity. What seems to be most glaring omission is the fact that that this plan doesn’t account for possible relocation.

Globe and Mail: Many NHLers trying to shake off the Swiss effect. I watched some of the Jets playing over in Europe during the lockout and it was very clear that they were playing a significantly different game than what we are used to seeing here in North America.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, February 28th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess in our contests. During tonight’s game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter 50/50 and Game Winning Goal contests. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) our 50/50 contest or the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #IC5050 $42,750 or #ICGWG Kane).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Competition fierce, long before game (with video). The Euro influence shows in the love of soccer as a warm-up.

Winnipeg Free Press: For 3-5-0 Jets, home is where the hard is. Who would have believed that this team would have trouble at the rambunctious MTS Centre?

Winnipeg Free Press: Montoya ready, Pasquale sent back. Pasquale probably would have liked to have seen some actual game action but probably enjoyed the NHL experience nonetheless. Good news about Enstrom, although who knows what week-to-week actually means.

Winnipeg Free Press: Full speed ahead. Ed makes a very valid point and it is the type of potential over-hype that coach Noel is guarding against. For the Jets to really show they have ‘turned a corner’ they will need to do well over the course of this two game mini home stand and then continue that success on the three game road trip to Florida.

Winnipeg Free Press: Candidate Kane. Gotta love that the 2014 Olympics, that the NHL may or may not be participating in, are already a focus of hockey mad Canada. Looking at those other potential 13th forwards, it wouldn’t be an easy feat to supplant one of them. What do you think? Do Evander Kane and Andrew Ladd deserve to be on the team?

Winnipeg Sun: Jets have faith in each other. You cannot get very far if you don’t believe in yourself or your teammates. Kudos to Paul Friesen on this biblical article which ends with the reference to the Devils. Sensational column.

Winnipeg Sun: Tough guy Peluso produces big bang for Jets in Big Apple. He continues to earn the trust of his coach and has gone from the press box to the 3rd line.

Globe and Mail: After successful road trip, Jets look to avoid letdown at MTS Centre. Having lost four straight games at home caused fans to question the advantage of the MTS Centre crowd.

Hockey’s Future: Hellebuyck makes easy adjustment to NCAA. If you want to know about the Jets goaltending prospect, here is some info.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel odd day audio. The Jets players had the day off yesterday following their five games in nine day road trip. Coach Noel met with the media to discuss this trip as well as the upcoming home stand.

Jets opponent (New Jersey Devils) news:

Star-Ledger: Kid from Manitoba becomes respected captain. A nice Manitoba success story. I’m sure he will have a lot of friends and family in the crowd to see the Brandon product lead his Devils into the MTS Centre.

The Record: Devils having poor encore after last season’s successes. The Devils will be looking to turn things around tonight although with future Hall of Famer Marty Brodeur on the IR, that becomes a much taller task.

NHL news:

USA Today: See Ilya Bryzgalov’s impressive new goalie mask. Star Wars fans are apparently not happy that Yoda’s lightSabre is red and not green.

Vancouver Sun: Ryan Kesler out indefinitely with broken foot. What terrible luck for the Canucks star who missed the first 12 games of the season as he recovered from off season surgery.

The Province: Manny Malhotra doesn’t agree with Mike Gillis decision but also doesn’t “question his sincerity one bit”. Malhotra shows a lot of class as he attempts to live with the decision made by Canucks GM Mike Gillis.

CBC: Name the proposed new NHL divisions. Immediately the Smythe Division springs to my mind. I would also be ok to modernize these to reflect more recent legends like Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr and Howe. What would you like to see?

For the Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news click here.

NHL Mid-Week with Illegal Curve Replay:

Replay: Proposed NHL realignment. Montreal acquires Michael Ryder and a 3rd round pick from Dallas in exchange for Erik Cole. Interview with Brad Treliving, Vice President of Hockey Operations & Assistant General Manager of the Phoenix Coyotes. Break it Down, Washington Capitals Power Play. Six Things We Learned This Week. Interview with Dan Wood, Anaheim Ducks Colour Analyst on 830 KLAA. Prospect Pulse with Illegal Curve Scouting Correspondent Kyle Kosior. Over/Under, Keep Your Eye On.

Jets news:

CBC: Superfan abroad dishes tough love to hometown fans. A good friend to the IC Hockey Show, he has some tough talk for fans who jump on and off the bandwagon.

Winnipeg Free Press: Facing Devils tonight 'an important game for us' says Jokinen. Jets cannot afford to have a let down tonight.

TSN: The Breakdown – Evander Kane (video). Craig Button breaks down Evander Kane’s game and what makes him such a dangerous player.

Friday Papers

Friday, March 1st Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news from 8 am to 11 am on Saturday (That is not a typo. With the Jets/Capitals game starting at 2pm, the guys are getting up early, for the second week in a row, to provide you with all the latest news). Guests: Pat Hickey (Montreal Gazette), Joe Beninati (CSN Washington) and Jeremy Weiss (Weiss Tech Hockey).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Ladd leading the way. This just in…your captain after his two goal performance last night is now 20th in the league in points (20 in 20 games) and tied for 4th overall with Tomas Vanek in goals (12).

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets believe in Jets. They may not be the prettiest wins in the league but at the end of the day all that counts is whether or not you have two points on the board as the final buzzer sounds. After putting together five wins in last six, it isn’t just the Jets who are believing in the Jets, as you can add the fans to that list.

Winnipeg Free Press: Buff, Ladd dynamic duo in charge-and-score play. In order for the Jets to continue having success they need Buff to continue to be the dominant player fans know he can be. We saw flashes of the old, non-injured Buff last night as he slowly gets back to form. The game winning goal he set up was a thing of beauty.

Winnipeg Sun: New and improved Winnipeg Jets finally find a winning recipe. Who are these guys and what have they done with the other Jets squad? You know, the one that couldn’t put together this many wins in a row. Contributions are coming from across the board.

Winnipeg Sun: Pavelec doesn’t play numbers game. He is now the all-time franchise leader in games played but even more impressive is he has played 18 of 20 games this season and has been getting better throughout this lockout shortened season.

TSN: Ladd ties record for fastest goal in a game. Without doing a google search, would you know who has the record that the Jets captain has now tied?

Jets on a Deadline – Jets 3 Devils 1:

Winnipeg Jets: Ondrej Pavelec, Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd & Dustin Byfuglien.

Coach Noel post-game presser: A lot of Joy in Joyland.

New Jersey Devils: Coach DeBoer, David Clarkson and Johan Hedberg.

Illegal Curve Post-game podcast from the Press box: Host Drew Mindell and Analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Devils.

Jets on a Deadline: Game recaps, post-game audio, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

NHL news:

Denver Post: Avs beat the Flames on and off the ice. O’Reilly should be sending Flames Jay Feaster a nice bottle or six of wine after the Avalanche matched the Calgary offer and will now pay O’Reilly 10 million for the next two seasons.

Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks win again! NHL record now 20. Chicago dispatched rival St. Louis, despite losing goalie Corey Crawford who didn’t return for the 2nd period.

Globe and Mail: Drouin’s meteoric rise to prominence propelled by social media and viral videos. Lots of talk about this prospect. You could even say “people are talking”.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Noel says clean points are huge. Playing the next four games against Southeast Division opponents will test this theory.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets chat. Join the Sun guys as Paul and Ken answer all your Jets related questions.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel. The Joy in Joyland continues. Today coach Noel had 400 screaming school kids at the MTS Centre along with the usual retinue of media.

Illegal Curve: Players audio. Scrums from Pavelec, Stuart, Wheeler and Ladd.

Capitals news:

Washington Times: Eric Fehr eager to show Jets what they’re missing. The Winkler product is showing the positive impact of the lockout as he appears fully healed and is playing well for the Capitals. He has seven points in 16 games with the Capitals whereas he only had three in 35 games during an injury plagued 2011-12 season.

Washington Post: Mike Green aggravates groin injury. Won’t be in Winnipeg for tomorrow’s game.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, March 2nd Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news:

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news from 8 am to 11 am today (That is not a typo. With the Jets/Capitals game starting at 2pm, the guys are getting up early, for the second week in a row, to provide you with all the latest news). Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) our 50/50 contest or the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #IC5050 $40,350 or #ICGWG Ladd).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Ladd employee of the month. He isn’t just leading the team in many scoring categories. In fact the Jets captain has earned his way into the top five for goals in the NHL. He had a February to remember and attributed a lot of his success to his linemates and his confidence.

Winnipeg Free Press: Power play provides nice break for opponents. The joke around town whenever the Jets have been awarded a power play by the zebras is whether it would be possible to decline the opportunity.

Winnipeg Free Press: No. 1 goalie’s number’s up. When I asked him how he felt having played 18 of 20 games so far this season he told me that he looks forward to the challenge of playing every night. When questioned about his actual numbers he remarked that it was not something he paid much attention to. And the truth is when he is playing like he has over the past six games not many will question his disinterest in stats.

Illegal Curve: One Winnipeg Jets fan won the 50/50 draw not once, but twice this season. A remarkable story about a Jets fans at the MTS Centre who has won twice this season, which saw him take home over $80,000.o0.

Winnipeg Sun: Noel preaches value of being greedy. Importance of clean wins continues as next four games are against divisional opponents. Also covered in this article was the Jets use of tennis balls in practice, Miettinen’s unfortunate injury location, Thorburn’s limited ice time and Eric Fehr’s return.

Winnipeg Sun: Are the Jets for real? Another great article by Paul and you have to love the answers by some of the players. The always pragmatic Ron Hainsey gives some good replies to the questions asked by Paul.

Winnipeg Sun: Redmond injury make Jets pull together. Teams often have to find a rallying point and it looks like the Jets are using the horrific injury to Zach Redmond as their rallying cry.

Illegal Curve: Coach Claude Noel audio. If you missed coach Noel’s presser from Friday, here ya go.

Illegal Curve: Players audio from MTS Centre. Ondrej Pavelec, Mark Stuart, Blake Wheeler and Andrew Ladd.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

TSN: Monarchs take down IceCaps in shootout. Eric O’Dell continues to be a bright spot in a season to forget over in St. John’s. The 22 year old had a two goal, 1 assist game in the loss but the IceCaps just cannot seem to get any traction as they sit 14th in the Eastern Conference.

Barrie Colts: Colts clinch Central Division with win. Back in the lineup, Mark Scheifele had two assists as he helped his team clinch the Central.
