With teams now being able to sign UFA's, their own prospects, RFAs, etc. there were a couple of players on the Sharks radar over the summer that may get a contract from SJ in Riley Brace (can sign anytime) and Rylan Schwartz (still playing at Col. College).

Both players are kind of on the "smaller" side but both could add some offense to Worcester. I actually really like Brace, been watching him for the past couple seasons as he plays for the Steelheads (DeMelo's team), not sure how much NHL upside he has but I think he'd do very well in the AHL. I've only seen Schwartz play a couple of times.

I have no inside info on whether or not they'll actually be signed but both were brought in for the development camp over the summer and both received pretty high praise from scouts.

It's my understanding that the AHL and Europe have the same effects on contracts at age 20+, no? I'm from Calgary though, and we seem to misunderstand the CBA a lot though (haha Feaster).

As far as what makes me think it, it's been discussed, though one camp wasn't particularly thrilled.

It would be another year not in the SJ system, and it isn't happening. Abeltshauser's name is inked on the Worcester roster for next season.

How does everyone feel about Nieto now? I remember it seemed like he was doing better than Coyle was for quite a while last year.

I don't think opinion on him has changed much (at least mine hasn't). He's definitely improved his 3 zone play the past two seasons but his ceiling still looks like a 2nd line winger to me.

I am looking forward to seeing him play in Worcester.

He's probably one of SJ's better prospects, but he's more likely to be stuck with Ferriero syndrome; he won't have the skillset for bottom-6 duty, and isn't skilled enough for top-6 minutes. He'd be ideal as a winger on a third-line-scoring-line; a line that can produce in soft minutes.

The Ferriero comparison isn't a good one. As stalockrox said he's improved his 3-zone play becoming pretty amazing defensively actually, that and he's bulked up a ton since he was drafted and hits and is strong along the boards. He definitely has the skill for the top 6 as long as he continues to develop, but if he doesn't he'd make a very nice scoring 3rd liner. He's completely different than Ferriero and doesn't seem to suffer from any of his problems, and I'm a huge defender of Ferriero. It all remains to be seen if this will translate to the next level.

It is one thing to be good defensively in college vs. the NHL.

Moreover, he is only what, 6 feet? How many defensive-specialists are that size? I agree that he could be a good tertiary scorer, but I would say that he is unlikely to crack a top-6 and likely not fit for a bottom-6 role. Again, judging from seeing him very few times, and his colelge statistics.

Perhaps a better comparison would be Jamie Mcginn, except that Mcginn had size.

Not the best way to evaluate a prospect's progression or upside in my opinion. Neither McGinn or Feriero are very good comparables.

I haven't watch BU as much as KirbyDots but I have seen Nieto play quite a bit and I agree with him/her on his upside. I don't think anyone believes he's going to become a defensive specialist at the next level but he's certainly capable of playing a good defensive game. The one thing he needs to do is find some consistency, that seems to be his biggest issue right now.

BU-Northeastern on CBS Sports right now.

Fabulous Nieto-O'Reagan and back to Nieto goal just scored. (BU leads 3-1)

The score sheet showing O'Reagan scored, not Nieto.

Breakaway (2-1), the two of them were tossing the puck between them.

Ferriero was on the other side. Saw him standing @ bench.

On a not very good Northeastern team I thought Ferriero looked good. He skates very well, has a great shot and has his brothers offensive instincts. His two way play looks to be better then Benn's but that's only the 5th or 6th time I've seen him play.

Just got back from the BU - Northeastern game. BU won shutting out Northeastern 5-0, it was an amazing night for O'Regan and Nieto! O'Regan had a goal and two assists and Nieto had a goal and an assist. Nieto's goal was one of the prettiest goals I've ever seen, took a pass from O'Regan on delayed penalty and in skated at an angle from the behind the goal line till he was in front then while facing away made a beautiful top shelf back hand snipe. It was incredible, he's at another level, totally dominant. If the Sharks were really desperate to bring him up and sign him he could be like Kreider, but if he plays another year it would be a crime to not make him captain. O'Regan was everywhere, he and Nieto are clued to each other and play in all situations, were great on the PP and the kill but equally dominant at even strength. They are now number 1 and 2 in scoring for the team. Ferriero was pretty noticeable out there, played well despite being shut out. He like the other two plays in all situations, is solid defensively and is skilled, fast, and even had a pretty nice breakaway or two.

Nieto is a junior already (thought he was a so), so he probably might wanna finish his education. I wouldn't mind O'Reagan and Nieto develop chemistry for another season and then go to AHL together. Hopefully it'll be a more fruitful relationship than McGinn-Couture which for some ****ing reason the coaching staff would refuse to make happen.

Nieto is a little streaky though which is something this organization doesn't need more of.

Agreed, I think giving him another year to finish college would probably be best. Let him lead a team and develop more chemistry with O'Regan, take the slow safe development path. This was the first game however that I thought he wouldn't look out of place making the jump to the NHL sooner rather than later. As far as being streaky, yeah he can be but this season it was more BU making adjustments as a team. The team has really gotten itself to another level, they finished the regular season only 1pt back of BC, they are third in Hockey East and look like they could go far in the post season.

Every time I catch Nieto he impresses. The kid can skate, shoot and is becoming a two way forward. Hes also grown significantly since being drafted. Hes also a physical player too. He was a first rounder who slid to the 2nd due to his size...well kids grow.

This, he looks bigger every game I go to, both height and build.

Nieto may need a new challenge and forego the last year of college.

ljmoffie 6:39pm via Twitter for iPhone Amazing way to finish my career at yost. Honor to play in such a special building with the best fans. This team will continue to #GoBlue

He could sign tomorrow and be with Worcester Wednesday.

Yay, just what we need here--another defenseman that can't score!
