Koivu was much the better player before the cancer and the toll of injuries hit him. He was a legit first line center for a time. I would say since then he is still Gomez's equal. Don't forget an already lessened Koivu sakted Joe Thorton into the ice in the playoffs. Note it was a young and injured Joe Thorton but Koivu owned him.
