I agree Wingfan, oilers need size power forward in their top 6. I think it is fair proposal. Fans always tend to overvalue players, but Hemsky will eventually have to be moved to address needs, make room for younger guys when the team starts to contend.

Why would a team give a first ballot Hall of Famer like Datsyuk wingers like Cleary and Abdelkaeder? Those two combined have 5 goals and 3 assists. But they are grittier than Hemsky so maybe they can scare the puck into the net.

No thanks from Detroit. We shouldn't trade any of our top prospects.

That being said, Sheahan is exactly what the Oilers need. Big kid, good skater, physical, solid offensively, and he's about as elite as it gets defensively for a prospect. Its hard to tell if he's going to develop into a 2C or more of a 2C/3C tweener, but I think he could really help the Oil when they start winning in a few years.

Hemsky is only a 2nd line winger because of Eberle.

He's 24th in scoring among players listed at RW on NHL.com (which has LWs Ryan, Semin, and Kovalchuk listed ahead of him). Last year was the only time since the lockout where Hemsky wasn't among the top 12 RWs in the league in PPG.

That puts Hemsky on the top line of over half the teams in the NHL each and every season. And aside from last year, only once since the days of Brett Hull have the Redwings had a RW who has produced more than Hemsky (Hossa in 08/09 who had 5 more points).

This.

Not to say that the Detroit offer doesn't have value. It's just that the constant bashing of Hemsky on these boards is ridiculous. Calling him "soft" "injury-prone" and "second line player" just proves how little those people commenting have seen him play.

The oilers know what they have with Hemsky and have no reason to trade him right now.

Also, the oilers are still not that far from a playoff spot. Not saying they are guaranteed to be in, but they may surprise a few people. The western conference is very close right now.

I knew he was good but I had no idea he was that high for RW production. Thanks for looking that up.

My only concern there is Hemsky's injury history. Is it possible it can be a 2nd that's upgraded to a conditional 1st contimgent on Hemsky playing a certain amount of games?
