If you're now evaluating high end players on their +- you have really lost all concept of how to look at players. Alan Quine was a -player is whole career up until the deadline and he got dealt to Belleville. Thus far in Belleville he has 33 points in 19 games and is a +22. It's funny how those things happen when you get put with decent players and a solid goalie how a +- can go up. Heck Quine isn't even that good in his own zone but that stat would tell you so. Kanuck's head is going to explode if Windsor gets the Memorial Cup.

I'm not a huge fan of +/-, because it does vary based on your team (and for other reasons), but that's why I compared him against his teammates playing the same position. There is some basis of comparison for Koekkoek v. Devlin or Trojanovic.

I could state it more simply, I believe that Ekblad's defensive and physical game are superior to Koekkeok's.

No, but where I was originally indifferent now I'm hoping they don't. The Windsor self promotion from you guys is getting to be a bit much. What would Freud say about men who over compensate?

Actually I haven't really self promoted Windsor that much because imo the thread has gotten out of hand. You just can't disregard Koekkoek as a top 10 pick and throw out Ekblad is better. There's a reason Koekkoek was drafted in the top 10. Comparing him against teammates is foolish imo because Devlin and Trojanovic are under a different coach now than Koekkoek was for the most part and he only played 2 games in Windsor.

Agree that +/- is a very misleading stat. Connor Brown was a -75 or so, and he went in the 5th round to the Leafs. He was just on a bad team, and played alot of minutes.

During Majors Memorial run, they had half their team in the top 20 for +/-, but it was clear that their players werent the cream of OHL, but rather a product of their team/environment.

Personally, I think London will get it. If Windsor misses playoffs, and losing some key players, they may not have the team to compete for Mem Cup. But, hey, look at the Saskatoon Blades?? Anything is possible.

As is usual we will have to agree to disagree. I was only comparing against same team, same coach - if that isn't a valid comparison what is? As for being a top 10 pick, pretty sure EK5 will be as well. Top 3 more likely and possibly #1 overall.

A few of us figured out Windsor could still get it. BUT considering the team or lack there of they have they maybe band from the event. Leaving the OHL finalist to participate.

Barrie Backs Colts Bid

Missed this in the news earlier this week, the upgrades to the BMC are approved if the Colts get the cup and definitely include the additional capacity required to bring the total seating up (increased boxes/increased restaurant seating):

Good link kanuck.......

But we've always known here in the O it's all about the money$$$$, and oh I forgot bigtime politics.

We all found out that the last time in Missy.

cause what other league would turn around and give it to a team other than a back to back mem cup champion in their own league.

What a no brainer and coup for the OHL, to showcase the league. But oh no not in King Branches Kingdom.

So I guess this time around the London Knights fit the bill.

As even though the deposit is only $25, the Hunters have kind of tipped the league's hand by selling mem cup pkgs already.

Tues is the short list, which reads London,London, and I forgot........London.

Pre selling tickets is a marketing tool used by many teams to show the selection committee they have fan support. Kingston did this back in 08 when they bid, course they had no chance but still they used this common tactic.

I didn't have a huge problem with Mississauga. They had the rink, they had the team, and all the OHL cups had been in the West, specifically in South Western Ontario in over a decade and hadn't been to Central Ontario since 1996... A little more fan support would have been nice, but all the other factors were there.

I can see them doing it in Kingston with the poor attendance to show support they have but in London where they sellout, c'mon they would have to show support. This is pure arrogance that its already in the bag.

@Kanuck.....the only reason Missy got it was because they put up the extra million if I remember right plz correct me if Im wrong and also the owner was a good friend of King Branch. Its all about the $$$$$$$ !!!!!!! And it was about screwing Windsor over the league didnt want Windsor to threepeat, which we had the horses to do that season also.

Don't worry Branch, Windsor has a long memory that's one reason I hope we do get it just so we can chant "Branch YOU Suck" when he hands out the cup.Won't that sound good across the country on Sportsnet in HD yet.LOL!!!!

I'm not going to say you were wrong...you could be quite right. I'm just saying it's not like Mississauga didn't have the team, the rink, the population to draw from etc. It was a solid bid...

Yes, your right it was a solid bid.But what brain dead commish would not give it to the team that just won back to back, has a brand new arena, huge fan base during that time, just held 2 of the most successful OHL/CHL events being the OHL all star game and Prospects skills comp/game, and finally still had a skilled roster maybe needed a bit of tweaking but could still have competed in the tourney even if Missy would have won the O and right in his own back yard.?????

But there's no conspiracy against WR/Boughner and the Spits.

You don't need to be Alex Jones to figure this one out.

The host for the following year is announced before the tourney, not after. So the Spits were only defending champs at the time, not back-to-back.
Bottom line is, Melnyk either guaranteed more money (likely) or the Spits botched their bid presentation. Which could be plausible when you look at how badly they have managed their roster this season.
Love the conspiracy theory though. Good stuff.

Excellent point, I hadn't thought of that. I went back and checked the dates, and the awarding of the cup was announced the week of that year's OHL final, so the Spitfires hadn't yet won their second OHL title at the time the Cup decision was made. Moreover, the presentations were made during April, so it's quite possible the Spits were down to the Rangers when it was decided that Mississauga would be the hosts.

Missy and Melnyk were promised the Mem Cup, probably when they committed to buying the Ice Dogs and taking over the lease of the Hershey Ctre, and for those reasons Cameron starting stock piling players for the run, 3 years in advance.

Windsor wasnt getting the 2011 Mem Cup, no matter what they presented or Branch states.

Missy only had , I believe 1 2nd year player actively playing, and that was Percy, and no rookies. For 3 years Cameron was planning to win the Mem Cup as the hosts, and for this reason they traded for mainly 4th year players.

What guarantees and/or safeguards are in place either from the City of Barrie or the Colts to ensure that the renovations are complete in time for the Memorial Cup should Barrie be awarded the tourney in 2014? There are realities of life such as labour disputes. How are potential cost overruns to be covered? If the cost of renovations goes over original estimates, does city council have to approve the additional expenditures before renovations proceed or are completed?

Your points are very valid, and realistic. From a time perspective, they will have 4 months to complete renovations (May to September). That should be adequate, as long as all permits and red tape are completed, ahead of time.

From a financial perspective, the City and owner will have to deal with it.

I believe that the owner has had the team for sale for a few years, but is asking for $17 million plus for the team, and thus no takers. It may be a ploy to force Branch's hands and give them the Mem Cup, to satisfy the owner and not let him leave, or sell the team?? Just thinking out loud.

I agree Percy brings up a lot of good questions. I question how quickly they can get that stuff done especially if Barrie has a long playoff run because that would prevent them from doing work on the arena. Of course some of the stuff could just be finished into October and have Barrie start on the road. As much as the committee has to be sold on a vision by each team for what they want to do and look as a team I think renovations and changing things around are much harder to sell.

I'm assuming that the council's go ahead will ensure the permits are issued. Some of the renovations - the dressing rooms, the patio expansion, the new sign - could probably start now without too much impact on the fans. As far as financially, I read it the same way you do - the city and the owner have to cover overages.

I think Gene Pereira's article this week is very fair and well thought out (course his views mirror my own, so what else would I think):

http://www.thebarrieexaminer.com/201...-smaller-teams

I didn't realize that we had bid 5 times. That's every time since the Colts came into the league only to get passed over. Early on, our rink was as good as it got, it's unfortunate that now it's a little small.
