For Nashville fans who are curious Piskula is a #7 D at the NHL level, no upside really. Responsible in his own end won't generate any zone breakouts but can pass the puck. Good filler on a depleted d-core.

It might be a boring trade but there could be some more movement

@TSNBobMcKenzie
CGY needs to open up an NHL roster spot for McGrattan. Likely do that in coming day(s). Doubtful McGrattan actually plays in AHL but TBD.

Who will be sent down by Calgary? Baertschi? Begin? Aliu?

Poor Joe Piskula.

I remember when we (kings) signed him in 2007. At that time, we thought Lombardi had pretty much stolen a gem in the making. It was rumored there were quite a few teams after him back then. He was supposed to be groomed as a replacement for Aaron Miller.

I think he almost immediately played a few games /w the Kings before being assigned to the AHL. But he never really developed his game much further, and quickly got passed up by other young D we were drafting.

Lost track of him after that, I had figured he had gone to Europe or something, but I guess he's been in the AHL system since then.

He might develop into some depth defenseman / emergency call up, but I doubt at this point he has much potential beyond that.

Sven isn't ready for a top 6 role, so I would rather see him playin the AHL, logging big minutes and developing. Getting so little playing time and not getting a chance to learn from his mistakes will stunt his growth.

Also. I really don't get this move. WE already have guys like Begin, this is the last thing we need. I'd much rather have Blair Jones up. Sure, he doesn't score, but he is one of our best on the faceoffs, and he tries his damndest, and has good positioning out there. Jones is much more useful than McGratton imo. Brian is a just a goon who will play a few minutes a game occasionally. We already have Begin and Jackman for gods sake.

I'm a semi supporter of Feaster, but I really don't like this. The only way I may like it is if we waive the useless Comeau out of this. Why a plug like Comeau stays while Jones is in the minors baffles me to no end

At this point I'd rather see them send Baertschi down. He's wasted in a bottom 6 role. I'd rather see him get some top-6 experience in the AHL.

We do have 8 D, maybe Smith/Babchuk for a prospect or pick?

I'd like to see Comeau gone though.

Begin and Jackman barely fight anymore. MacDonald got run over in back-to-back games, Matt Stajan got elbowed in the face and nobody did a damn thing about it. This team has no backbone.

At least teams will think twice now with McGrattan in the lineup. If anything, he will act as a deterrent.

Why not claim him
The contract limit and this way they can send him to the AHL.

@FriedgeHNIC
This explains why CAL traded for McGrattan and did not claim him on waivers is they needed the roster spot. If they claimed him, they be at the maximum 50 contracts.

See this trade had some major repercussions

See guys? I was right! The McGrattan move is the precursor to the Ryan O'Reilly offer sheet. And so it begins, the Brian McGrattan era.

Crap, Poile released the Kraken.

Like the guy, but not surprised. No one would drop with him.

Big impact in his first game. Throwing hits all night, then KOs Vancouver's tough guy. Exactly what this low energy and soft team needed.

Sestito is not the Canucks tough guy. Hes just the guy who plays the role so Kassian doesnt have to.

Kassian would have clobbered McGrattin

No, no he would not. McGrattan would destroy either Kassian, but especially Zack.

Agreed. There's not a "goon" in the league I would put against McGrattan. "Semis" like Kassian(s) would be lucky to get off the ice if they were dumb enough to try to fight him.

Yeah wasn't a KO, definite clobbering, unless your name is Steve Bennett.

I'm surprised to hear that he was hitting, as that wasn't really something he did much of in Nashville. If he had, he might not have lost his spot to Rich Clune, although Clune is a far better hockey player\worse fighter.

That ended up being what it came down to...he's a super guy, the best fighter in the league, hands down...but really not capable of more than 3-4 minutes of icetime.

He was so happy to come back to Calgary... like, super excited. Dude played his role to a tee last night. Saluted the fans, and the place goes nuts. He must've had adrenaline running through his veins last night. I was at the game, him and Sestito were beaking off at each other pretty good.

You can't play him more than 3-4 minutes a night, but he definitely showed he could handle his own when out there. He actually played better hockey than what I thought.
