I have faith though that we come out with a winner in this draft in the first round.
Would disagree 100%. I obviously watch mostly WHL hockey in regards to prospects and the draft, but this league is a perfect example of that not being true. Guys like Heatherington, Petan, Jarry, Bjorkstrand, Mueller, Burke, Geertsen etc etc have climbed their way out of the woodwork this season and made pretty decent names for themselves. There will be fantastic depth into the 4th and 5th rounds just from the WHL alone.

Say we don't get a sniff of Jones and end up picking around 10.

Darnell Nurse anybody? Huge frame, physical, has offensive upside, has exploded rapidly in his development. Love the though of him and Dunc as towers of power on the blueline someday.

I haven't seen Nurse play a lot but I still like what I hear about him.

Sorry, but I wouldn't want either Nurse or Zadorov (great players no doubt) with the 10th overall pick, more in the 15th-ish.

Erne between 9th and 12th would be amazing.

The way injuries plague this team, it would be good to have a Nurse on the roster.

From what I've read about him he would be a good pick up.

My evolving thoughts... If we are picking #10 I want one of: Gauthier, Nurse, Erne, Shinkaruk, Ristolainen, Morrissey, and Zadorov in that order.

I still think we'll end up with a top-5 pick. The Avs typically crash later in the season.

If he was not a risk to stay in the KHL, I think Valeri Nichushkin would find a great NICHE at LW from day 1.
Lando-ROR/Staz
McGinn-Staz/Dutch
Nich- Dutch/ROR

Simply because of that risk I don't see him going before the middle of the 1st (at very earliest) and he could slide down farther. Anton Slepyshev would have been a late 1st early 2nd last year if he wasn't in the KHL and showed a real desire to come over. Instead he fell out of the draft.

Another reason why I don't start caring about the draft until around the deadline. Not going to get my hopes up on players the Avs have no shot at getting.

That can't happen. We have $6.5 million of grit and character in the lineup now.

it needs to happen. it would broom out Sacco, improve our roster and potentially force ownership to more aggressively improve the roster.

Bump.

Currently 3rd last in the NHL and only one point out of last place. After some optimism two weeks ago, I am back on the fail bandwagon for our team. Really hoping we can get a chance to draft Seth Jones...with MacKinnon, Drouin or Barkov being a hell of a consolation prize in the end.

Keep on sucking Avs!

Agreed 100%.

But if we're not taking Jones, I want Drouin. So hopefully we can trade up to get him if we fall into the 6-10 territory.

Out of the two Mooseheads Drouin is more talented, but again MacKinnon would be a better fit for our team.

1. Jones
2. Barkov
3A. MacKinnon
3B. Drouin

You guys are going to be so disappointed when Avs have a strong second half of the season.

As far as we have fallen I really don't see us getting a top 5 pick unless we win the lottery. When healthy we are a fringe playoff team. Not being 6 points out in this shortened season really signals we won't get there, but 10th in the Westen Conference is easily in the realm of possibility.

Now the Avs have proven they are great at tanking. So, if they put their mind to it they can trade off Stastny, ROB, Zanon, SOB, and Kobasew and let the kids make mistakes to help the tank.

Disagreed wholeheartedly. I think Drouin ends up the better of the two in the long run and goes on to be a more dynamic offensive player. His understanding of the game is amazing and his natural abilities are underrated even by those seeing him as a #4 pick.

He could be that long term LW for Stastny we've all been craving.

Imagine if we kept Staz, put Drouin on his wing and used O'Reilly/Landeskog as our shutdown line?

McGinn - Duchy - PAP
Drouin - Staz - Jones
Landeskog - O'Reilly - Downie
McLeod - Heard (for lack of better ideal #4 defensive center) - Bordeleau

Drool.

Too bad our defense still isn't even Calder Cup caliber in that scenario.

I hope we do have a strong second half of the season, but Avs never cease to amaze me when it comes to losing. They lose when they dominate, they lose when they suck, they lose when the team is healthy, they lose when the team is injury ridden, they lose up by 2 goals, and they lose when they're down by 2 goals.

at this point Sacco is Josh McDaniels to me. i just want him gone by any means necessary.
i highly doubt we have a strong 2nd half and for the future of the team we need Seth Jones to fix the D.

Don't get me wrong any one of those players would improve our team, but based on what I have seen I prefer MacKinnon and Barkov over Drouin. Though it is very, very, very close.

We have games in hand on the rest of the bottom 6 teams. Unless we go on a few games losing streak we're not going to cement ourselves below FLA/Columbus/Edm/Buffalo/Tampa. I still see us finishing 5-10th last with EJ and Wilson coming back and I'd rather not see another brutal season of losing like the ends of 08/09 and 10/11.

As for the top 5 its hard to say how I would want to choose. I firmly believe that taking a defenseman that high is a much bigger risk than taking one of the top forwards. Seth Jones might be great (have only really seen him in WJC) but the things that are said about him have been said about EJ, Larsson, and others before and while many highly touted D prospects become excellent NHL players, I don't know that they generally tend to be the best possible choices.

I would probably want
Drouin
Jones
Mackinnon
Barkov
Nichuskin
Lindholm in that order

though I assume Nichushkin is out of the question with his KHL contract.

Id rather not embrace the culture of losing like the oilers (they have 1st overall parties ffs).
