Hopefully the new General Manager will get rid of this punk in June.

For me, the fact that the play can cause serious injury should be weighed into suspension length but it's clear that Shanahan doesn't give punishments based on that. Therefore, I'd expect Kaleta to get around 4 games.
I basically agree with that.

I think it was at best a very careless play. Richards is slowy moving to the boards and doesn't anticipate getting crosschecked, respectively a hockey player just can't defend himself in any way from getting illegally pushed from behind. Richards went in head first, I'm glad he wasn't seriously injured on the play, but to be honest I'd suspend Kaleta for at least 4 games, Sabres fan or not. These are the things you want to keep out of the game.

Uh, no. Hopefully not. Hopefully this "punk" will be a Sabre as long as he's an effective NHL player - which he certainly is right now.

It was barely a push, and Richard went down awfully easy. It was a stupid play by Kaleta, and I can see maybe a game or two, but it wasn't some malicious attempt to hurt Richards.

Also, the hit on Ennis, since there was a lot more force to the hit, had the potentially to be much more serious injury-wise. If you want to eliminate those hits, you have to eliminate all of them.

Well, I don't say that the action was that vicous, but it was very, very careless. Additionally the push wasn't that hard, but it was definitely enough to get Richards out of balance (how the heck do you want to stay on your feet when you'll get a push from behind, while slowly sliding and leaning a bit forward?) - he went in head first and wasn't able to pull his arms up in time. I don't think he went down intentionally that easy, he could've ended up with a serious injury.

The name on the back is more important than the name on the front.

Unless you play for the Bruins.

I'm not sure if he's insanely lucky or has a spinal column made out of titanium.

I'm not sure if you played hockey (not meaning to insult you at all one way or the other) but if you've ever been in that spot, it's hard not to go down easy. I don't think there was intent to injure either but he was vulnerable and hit him right in the numbers. And no, the Ennis hit didn't have anywhere near the injury potential even though it was a harder hit. Richards could have been paralyzed. Ennis could have been concussed or injured his shoulder. The hits just aren't comparable. The real joke is the hit on Gerbe last year (I believe by Bourdon) wasn't suspendable.

The league never ceases to amaze me with their inconsistency. A suspension was warranted, but if that hit warranted a 5 game suspension, the league should be handing out 10+ of those per week.

Ennis went headfirst into the boards. The potential for injury was just as great in my opinion. If you want one hit out of the game, you have to want the other as well.

And I'm not implying Richards sold anything, but he wasn't strong on his skates on that play.

Also, it has nothing to do with playing hockey or not. I'm aware of the physics in the situation.

Whatever. I agree it was a stupid hit but I think the 5 games was excessive.

Time to move on. At least Richards has a career waiting for him in soccer when he gets sick of hockey.

I'll go with the opinion of a spinal surgeon.

http://blogs.democratandchronicle.com/kevino/ . He hits Ennis in the midst of turning (I think he went chest first into the boards and then hit his head) while Richards was square to the boards before the hit. I know you didn't say Richards sold it and I certainly didn't mean to imply that you did. The guy had to be in complete shock at first thinking "Holy S***, I might be paralyzed", could have had a stinger, who knows. Saying he sold that is a stretch in my opinion.

They just didn't want Kaleta playing the Rangers again in 5 games.

Peters said he would break down how Richards folded like a lawn chair on his show tonight. Can anyone provide what he says later tonight? I have DirectTv and do not get this show.

5 is excessive.

At least Kaleta will have a chance to heal a bit, assuming he is nursing a variety of minor injuries.

The major difference between the Ennis hit and the Richards hit was that Ennis had his head up and Richards had his head down. If Richards is skating with his head up, he doesn't lose his balance like that and it's a nothing play. If Ennis had his head down, he is dead right now.
