This was honestly a pretty crafty move by Calgary even though it didn't work out.

They signed him to a 2 year, $5 million/year contract, but they really gave him a 4 year deal paying him at least $6.5 million the final 3 years. I really thought that would work. I bet it could on a team like the Islanders ... maybe some of the other financially struggling teams. They may have created a new loop hole of sorts. It keeps the cap hit low (keeping the draft pick compensation lower), but it commits a huge salary to the player for 2 extra years because of qualifying offer rules.

Creative way to circumvent the system.

Another case where the owners end up shooting their own foot and will most likely be responsbible if another work stoppage results in 10 years. A $6.5M qualifying offer for a defensive forward is going to drive prices up for the other impending RFAs of the same caliber. I shudder to think what'd happen if Eakin puts together a 50-60 point season next year.

I just hope it's a one-off occurrence like Penner.

Unfortunately ... Eakin is already on pace for a 49 point equivalent season right now. More often than not ... agents tend to do pretty well against these NHL GM's. They'll start by projecting this season out as a full 82 and argue that that's how they're client should be viewed.

It's way to early to start projecting numbers, but the contracts so far have done nothing to convince me we should expect much change in rising RFA costs.

But of course, and that means, we need to be in negotiations (if that's possible) somewhere during the midst of next season and have a deal in place before it ends to prevent any offer-sheeting on Dillon, Eakin, Smith, Roussel, etc. I don't trust Jabba the Hutt will quiet down after this.

Eakin can sign an extension starting July 1st. They can negotiate now, it just can't be official. Eriksson signed his 6 year extension the fall of his 2nd year of his bridge contract.

I think they'll push for the bridge though meaning he is probably a guy that goes into the summer unsigned. Same for all those players mentioned.

The more times team match offer sheets the better. I think Weber and ROR were unique situations, and these things are going to keep being rare. ROR never should have got to this point, but the team and player bungled negotiations.

I wanted to wait until a more reliable source commented ... but this is so awesome!

For those asking, yes, my understanding is if COL hadn't matched CGY offer on O'Reilly, CGY would have had to put him on waivers to play now

Way to go Calgary!!! There have been rumors all morning that this was true. They would have lost their 1st and 3rd round pick ... an then lost ROR.

So funny!

Anticipating a question about why this didn't apply to Benn:

1) He didn't play a game in Europe after the lockout ended.

2) There has been a revision to the CBA according to the MOU, players on a teams Reserve List or RFAs are exempt.

ROR is exempt now because he is Colorado's RFA. However, having played 2 games after the lockout was officially over, and not being on CGY's Reserve List or their own RFA, he would have required waivers to play for them.

I don't think COL is low enough to have won the claim, but the ultimate end to this obviously would have been COL not matching thus getting the picks and then receiving ROR via a waiver claim.

Ribeiro has really impressed me this year. He looks like his 90 point pace days. A really underrated player, always creates stuff. I love Eakin and we needed to move on but I wouldn't mind trying to resign Ribeiro in the summer is Washington doesn't. He looks good on the wing so far.

That delay of game call was extremely marginal.
