Shero was very confident of resigning him. Misplaced confidence as it turned out, but that certainly played into the price paid.

I don't see the fit. Pens have no trouble scoring. They need some help on the D end of the rink.

Dupuis was a throw in having little to no value.

Shero's been eyeing Iginla to target in a trade for about five years.

Until Calgary entertains the idea of moving him, there's nothing to see here.

I wouldn't overpay to get him (in which case the Flames would also have no reason to trade him) but this top 6 would be beautiful:

Kunitz - Crosby - Iginla
Bennett/Dupuis - Malkin - Neal

Sweet ... another Iggy to Pittsburgh thread on this site. What is this, thread number 1,000 within the last two weeks. Seriously, this has been beaten to death. I'm not too sure I want to give up much for a rental. This is what I see Iggy as.

While I agree the Pens need to look at D first (and not just d-men, but forwards who play better D), they also need a physical top 6 winger.

Yeah, I think we need a sticky for Iginla to Pens. Or atleast a sticky for Iginla talk.

stat-wise Blake Comeau seems comparable to Dupuis at the time of the trade.

Hossa was one of the premier 2-way players in the game and was in his prime.

Not

Comparable

At

All

Trades are situational. Comparing past and recent trades is stupid. Market fluctuates too much and perceived value is subjective among GMs.

Yet has proven to be more valuable than any pieces the Penguins traded in that deal.

I still find it funny that he's the only player that really has meant anything to either team (well, for more than a couple months). He's become the most integral part of the deal. Hell, looking back the deal minus Hossa, for the playoff run, would be enough to look back at it and still say it worked for us.

If Shero thinks he has a good chance of re-signing Iginla at a reasonable number for say 3-4 years, I absolutely pull the trigger on something like 1st+Maatta+Kennedy.

He should still have another two good years in him and he would be a perfect fit. The goal should be to win the Cup this and the next few years, not hoard assets that may help the team 3 years down the line.

No way. I'm shocked that the Penguins are interested in bringing in a right-handed top-line winger who would fit with Sid like a glove. Need more grinders and stuffs.

Doesn't matter. Bylsma doesn't believe in Defense. His philosophy is the best defense is to always play in the offensive zone (paraphrasing him).

Not at the cost being talked about here. Not for a rental. Shero should be diligently looking for a long term solution at wing. Not a rental for the cost of two firsts and a roster player as is being talked about in all of these threads.
I hope that long term solution of yours comes cheap. According to cap geek, the Pens have $10M of cap space with 7 players to sign. So not sure what the plan is but it looks like a case of closing one hole and opening another up.

Penguins can free up cap space by allowing some D prospects to contribute at the NHL level.

Every Pens fan should have to have "We can't trade our only legit forward prospect so don't bother putting Bennett in your trade proposals" in our signatures.

So are there ever any different Rumors about which winger is getting traded to the penguins? This one has been nonstop since the olympics and never ever had any factual basis revealed.....

Martin, Niskanen, and Kennedy = $9m right there. Pens have defensemen growing out of their ears in WBS.

Trust me, none of those 7 players are a priority to sign. Maybe Dupuis, but I don't think we will have a problem with him asking for more money.

Again, Iggy on the Pens would be a dream come true for me. My offer: Maatta, Kennedy, 2013 1st.

I can't see it working without one of Bennett/Depres + a 1st.

IF Iginla OKs a trade/the team is willing to move him, I'm unsure as to whether they will ship him far out East to avoid him playing in the division/conference, or if they'll ship him somewhere close to Calgary so he remains near to his family.

Bennett isn't going for Iggy. He is our lone forward prospect that can make an impact in the league for at least two years.

Despres and a first is overpayment for Iggy IMO, especially for a rental.
