NHL LAYS OUT NEW RULES FOR DRAFT LOTTERY

Edit - so they finally did go to the 14-team lottery.

I like it. I've always thought teams were punished too much for finishing 9th-12th, for instance. I actually think they didn't go far enough in that teams can only move down 1 spot. I'd prefer to see teams be able to move down 3 or 4 spots but of course not outside the top 14 (i.e. the 14th-last team can pick at worst 14th overall). The odds seem reasonable though.

I'm pretty sure that it will be done the same way as it has in the past, one winner is drawn and now instead of that winner moving up in the draft 4 spots, they just get first overall. In order for teams to move down 3 or 4 you'd have to have multiple draws and teams ranked accordingly, which could get messy and complicated.

As I understand it, if you get drawn, you have first overall pick. If not, you stay where you are (unless a team behind you won, in which case you move back a spot as they passed you)

That's exactly how I understand it. I like it. Basically just a 14-team draw for the 1st overall pick and that's that.

I understand that, I meant the top-14 (13 really) should all be drawn. You're probably right that it'd be too complicated.

Are the lottery's filmed ahead of time or shown on TV live?

Why? It nice to give everyone a shot at the first pick but IMO it would be unfair not to allow the worst team to get the 2nd pick and so on.

Great. Another 10 years of awarding bad teams for doing bad, and we should be at the point where we can give everyone a 41W41L record and all give each other cupcakes and back massages instead of playoffs.

I guess that depends on where we end up. If we are in the playoffs nothing. If on the outside bring out the lucky charms

It's always been a 14 team lottery. Just now the winner moves up to #1, not moving up 5 spots. This is not news, this was laid out in MOA.

Having the worst team pick at slot 5 or? would be terrible imo.

I don't like that a team that finishes at 12 or worse could pick number one. Of course if it was Winnipeg , well hey I wouldn't be as upset. Can you imagine if Edmonton finishes just out of the playoffs and wins the lottery? You don't see the NFL do this and they don't for good reasons , imo.

I had meant in opportunity to win the #1 spot.

It doesn't mean much for us, except that all 14 teams that miss the playoffs have a chance at 1st overall.

This is why the nhl needs transparency with it.

Make the draw on live tv

If they did a lottery for the first five slots and kept the odds as they are the chance that the worst team doesnt get a 1-4 pick is small.
It sucks to watch poorly run franchises get top picks year after year instead of having the new talent spread around a bit.

The odds outside of the bottom few teams of winning it is not very good. They are using the same odds as in the past, difference being if you win you get the 1st overall pick. So the odds of the 30th place team getting the number one pick has dropped from 48% to 25%.

25.0% - 30th
18.8% - 29th
14.2% - 28th
10.7% - 27th
8.1% - 26th
6.2% - 25th
4.7% - 24th
3.6% - 23rd
2.7% - 22nd
2.1% - 21st
1.5% - 20th
1.1% - 19th
0.8% - 18th
0.5% - 17th

Exactly. For reference sake, nobody outside the bottom 8 have ever won it in the past.

As opposed to what? The best team picks first overall?

Parity is a great thing in this league and modern sports in general. This helps to somewhat generate that.

thats the problem. Not rewarding the worst team with the ability to improve (ie a high pick) doesn't work as it's based on the assumption the worst team is trying to suck.

That doesn't work because SOMEONE has to come last, regardless of how hard they've tried. Ensuring they at least get the 2nd ova pick is fine. the reduced odds of hitting the big time with the #1 pick for the worst team is good IMO.

What about columbus last year for example? they certainly didn't "tank" they spent more money then they ahd previously and acquired two big pieces, but still ended up coming in last.

This system is fine by me. A complete lottery for seeding of the bottom 15 makes it far too easy to hide tampering/riggin IMO and could really punish weaker franchises just with dumb luck.

There should be a rule that you can't draft 1st 2 years in a row.

Columbus got ripped off big time & the Oilers don't deserve another 1st pick.
