Sure, but if a GM forces himself into a corner with a dumb deal, he should be maligned for it.
This deal reiterates how GMGM can be leveraged by nobodies in contract negotiations. It limits the organization's future flexibility for no good reason. If Oleksy was actually coveted by any other team, he'd have been signed already.

Some fans put a far lower value on toughness and its importance than others. Plain and simple. If you value toughness than this roster spot and two way contract is chicken feed and a bargain. If you don't like toughness you will look for a reason to not like this contract. Sorry Wiz. I can see through you on this one.

His point is pretty darn simple. There was no need for McPhee to occupy a contract slot for three years with this player. He could have been signed for less term.

Oduya has been underrated physically for some time. He had a bit of a rep in the SEL that made alot of us back at the time hope he would make the Caps.

Why would any vet player sign a one-year deal with the Caps now that they've given Steven ****ing Oleksy a 3-year deal? Let's say the Caps want to pursue Marek Zidlicky or Lubomir Visnovsky this summer. If GMGM offers a one-year deal, I guarantee their agents will come right back and say something to the effect of "well if you believe Steven Oleksy deserves a 3-year deal, my guy surely deserves it too".

And the whole 'bet' thing is just a nonsensical concept. Very few moves singlehandedly cost any team the Cup. It's always a culmination of moves.
Adding fringe players who can fight isn't really addressing the problem. The players who have to go out and win the games need to be tougher. Adding toughness at the margins of the lineup does help somewhat, but it doesn't address the fundamental issues.
I've seen Olie play a lot. He will certainly add toughness but he is not stupid with it. He is a pretty smart defenseman who thinks "D" first but can push the puck a little as well. I expect him to be a stay at home guy and won't goon it up unless someone asks him to. I don't see him trying Lucic right out of the gate tonight but McQuaid, Thornton or Campbell may be options just to show he is willing and able.
I like toughness. I don't like 27 year-old career minor-leaguers getting more than 1-year deals.
