Waiving Hamr to clear a roster spot for Oleksy is moronic. Awful management by McPhee here. Our bottom pairing has struggled mightly this season so far, so why Oates/McPhee wouldn't give Hamrlik a shot is beyond me. It's not as if this team is cap strapped right now, and someone would have been willing to give something for Hamrlik. If healthy scratch Gagne can return a conditional pick and Trent Hunter can fetch a 4th, Hamrlik is at least worth a middle or late round pick.

Stupid stupid stupid

With Visnovsky leaving the team for personal reasons, it makes sense.

Cant believe Hamr was waived...

He would be a good addition to the isles. I could see maybe Ottawa or STL too. Even Nashville. Actually a lot of teams would be interested.

Kind of dumb they didn't trade him.

I would think the Blues would. Armstrong kicked the tires on a possible deal for hammer last year.

You can only do so much. If there's not a team out there willing to trade for him what are you supposed to do? By all reports, Hamrlik was shopped as early as last season before the deadline and my guess is that he's continued to be shopped all offseason and season long with no takers. If there was a team willing to trade for him he would have been shipped out by now. Tells me no teams are willing to give up any assets for him at this point.

I'm not so sure he will be claimed. Age is certainly catching up with him and he's pretty slow now. $3.5M cap hit for the rest of the year and most of his salary has already
been paid so I guess a team with cap space could try him and if he's bad can just let him walk in the summer but I'm not so sure that'll happen. Easily could see him clearing.

Kostopoulos to my knowledge was on a PTO down in WBS. Penguins organization has brought him back and it intends to use him for the minors. He won't be claimed. Any team could have signed him for months and there were no takers.

You don't think they tried?

Recall reading within the last two weeks that GMGM was surprised and of course disappointed that he was learning that Hamrlik had no trade value with his fellow GMs.

Panthers just lost 2 d-men to injuries for at least 1 month (Kulikov & Weaver) so they could potentially claim Hamrlik too. Right now they have 2 AHL call-ups in the lineup so I wouldnt mind Hammer just being here for the duration of this season. Heck he wouldnt hurt with tanking for the Panthers and with him, I think we could form the oldest defense in the league too (Jovo is 36, Kuba is 35, Weaver is 34, Campbell is 33)

That's how Snow is building his team. Cheaper too.

Hamr is fine in a defense-first system, which is what the Hunter-led Caps played in the playoffs last year.

In circumstances where the forwards are not mandated to play responsible defense (which is the preferred mode for several Caps forwards), he's not so good, because he lacks the foot speed and agility to cover up for their lapses. Of course, you could say the same about Erskine, who we just signed at half Hamr's cap hit (and who's been playing well).

Not exactly. You don't get the option of taking him if nobody claims him, you have to put in a claim from the get go. Only if you are, as the original team, the only one to put in a claim can you assign him directly to the AHL.

How long does Hamrlik have on his deal? He'd make our bottom pairing soooo much better.
