It seems tsn changed the wording of the article, not suggesting a 5-year contract anymore.

Sabres don;t like big salaries, thats why Mckee is gone so Briere will be gone and they will rather have two players at that price instead of 1.

A Ribs and a Dman for Briere may make sense since Buffalo lost Mckee and their D is either really young (Paetsch) or really old (Numminen), maybe both sides would add more to address their team needs more....Buffalo may send more than Briere.
Briere, Biron to Habs for Ribero, Komisarek, Higgins and Abby

Maybe if he can put up a whole injury free season at a PPG pace, but he's never done it yet).
I don't agree...

Briere would have at least 75 points in Montreal...
Ryder would'nt have more then 65 points and that's if he reach it...

Briere would make his teamates better
Ryder don't help anyone on the ice...

So the point production of Briere + the points of his teamates >>> the points production of Ryder + some points here and there

Even if Briere gain twice as much as Ryder, he's better...

Why waste prospects and our best goal scorer? Let's wait 1-year and try to get him on the UFA market. By then Bonk and Ribeiro contract's are up and that almost free up 5M for Briere and 900k for Chipchura.

Poor ole Ribiero, every time there's a Hab trade rumour, this poor boy must feel really wanted. Habs fans expect a giganic return for him, however they want him out of town and think all Gm's are stupid.

Ryder is a relative of mine, thus I'm a little biased toward him. However, to think that he would bring Briere is absurb. When an arbitrator awards him less than 3 mil, after awarding Briere 5 mil, this should speak volumes on the comparables.

The ruling came down for Buffalo, however if he does indeed get traded, is the team that acquired him, allowed to neg. contract extensions?

Obviously Ryder and Briere aren't comparable talent-wise, but you have to take the economics into consideration.

The Sabres have something like 7 more players going to arbitration, and are working at 7-8 million under the cap as per management. In trading Briere (1 year from free agency) they are simply wishing to free up cap space and will definitely not get equal value in return.

That being said, could Ryder fetch him? Probably not, but it's not totally absurd given the circumstances.

contract extensions can only be made in the last year of a contract and only after January 1st and that is for every team

That is crazy!!

1. Why do we need Biron when we a 2 #1 goalies and a 2-3 prospects knocking on the door.

2. We are not trading Higgins or Komi... that you can take to the bank!

3. $5 million throws our salary structure out of wack!!!

4. $5 million alos kills any flexibility in the season, unless you're sending two players back to Buffalo.

Biere would be nice, but ot for $5 million... pass on it Bob!!

No way!! That would decimate our depth. That sounds like a Reggie Houle trade.

Briere would be great here, but c'mon.

- For 5 million dollars, can we find a better player (thru trade) ?
- Is Buffalo going to trade within the division?
- Do we want to give Buffalo a valuable asset to play against 8 times a year (ie, Ryder).

I don't think Sabres would trade with the Habs, they are in the same division and would not like to see Brière 8 times in a season.

If it happens, then I'm gonna be happy because he's one of my favourite player.

Yeah, and sadly that was one of Houle's better trades.

18-Mar-97: Montreal Canadiens traded Murray Baron and Chris Murray to the Phoenix Coyotes for Dave Manson.

I don't see the big deal there.

Go BOB Go

Get us Briere and get rid of Ribs, I'd include Perez in that deal no question since we have Kost to take his spot.

Ribs Perz and pick or Perz, Sourray and Pick and deal Ribs for a pick.

Do it.

Adding a guy of Briere's character and scoring ability, he adds leadership and is young. This would be a fantastic pickup.

I'm dreaming of top lines centered by Briere and Koivu, with the likes of Higgins, Samsonov, Ryder, Kovalev and Kostytsin on the wings.

FANTASTIC

Our Murray stocks were severely depleted until we got Garth Murray.

I doubt it will happen... i mean if buffalo aren't willing to give 5M$ to Briere (their best player), who would seriously? Moreover, montreal are in the same division and will be fighting for the same playoff spot next year... so basically it's very unlikely that they will send him here....
