I really hope we keep him. Always seems to put in a consistent effort and does what is asked of him. But as others have said, if he asks for too much money, then he's gone.
Paajarvi and Harti go down before Jones gets moved. Jones is the one vet already in our bottom 6 we need to keep around.
Smyth - Belanger - Jones
Eager - CVV/Petrell - Brown
Petrell/CVV
PRV and Harti (once of IR) to OKC to play top 6
Seconded, I don't even like Jones but were not moving him off the 3rd line for Brown. Knowing Tambo, Eager is probably on his way out of town. Can't have more then one high energy guy on the 4th line.
Already regret Brodziak being traded and regret not re-signing Glencross... losing Jones now too would be pretty crappy. This team has good skill guys, but we need those guys that bring the lunch pail each game and score when the talented guys can't get it done.
Let us see who are comparable players to Jones and how much they are making. Ponikarovsky is making 1.8M and Troy Brouwer is making 2.35M so he will ask Brouwer money and will get at least 2.0M in the open market. To me he is too expensive fourth liner and he is taking a spot to develop Hartikainen and Paajarvi.
If he can overplay Smyth this year then I am considering to keep him with 2-3 year deal and give Smyth walk away papers after his contract has expired
The question is do they pay Jones, Glencross $2.8M money or Brouwer $3.6M money? If they didn't have Smyth they could pay $2.5M, is Jones worth that much? Smyth isn't but that is another story.
Wha are your thoughts ? Who do you move in the first place
My thoughts are that Brown was brought in because there was underachievement in the toughness department. Harti was suppose to bring that. I have a feeling he's back in the AHL when healthy.
Jones is a solid player, but no need for us to overpay him.
Hes ufa and i hope he can make some good bucks somewhere els, he has earned that.
Isn't that what people said about Glencross? IMO we need to keep him he is one of the few oilers who competes every night and he has proven that he can produce offense as well.
I'm not sure he deserves much of a pay increase. I love his game, but he's not irreplacable, and I don't know if other teams are keen on picking up an energy guy who has been ok, but not outstanding, from a league bottom feeder like us. If we can get him an extension at a decent price, then do it. I actually wouldn't mind seeing the team juggle the lineup to have him in the top six.

So did cogliano also, never injured also! I like jonesy but not so much that i is willing to overpay for him, his kind of talent isnt rare.
Jonesy hasnt had a big contract, but he gets better and are solid. Ufa year is that time when you can choose and some teams maybe is willing to overpay to get him.
I hope he gets a big paycheck but i also hopes that we dont overpay him!

Sure wish I could of got that better parking spot this morning. See what I did there? Rip the rear view mirror off man.
He's gonna get a 2M dollar contract. I'd like for him to stay in Edmonton for 3 years. Coming off the injury and the shortened season, we should get a nice home town discount. Gotta keep guys like this around. He could be part of a nice fourth line for a few years with Mike Brown.

If you gave him a longish term deal (3 to 4 years), I could see the Oilers getting him around $1.75M, money in exchange for stability. Here's hoping anyways.
Jones has done a good job of filling the Fernando Pisani checking line RW role we've been needing since probably a year before Pisani himself left the organization.
He can keep his head above water against good players (which he wasn't doing in his first 2 seasons with Edmonton) and add timely offense. He does it while playing a more banging style of game, though I'm not sure he's quite as effective overall as Pies was in his hayday. He's also a good penalty killer, which is always nice.
I like him in that role going forward, and if depth pushes him to the 4th line, then that's even better. Hopefully he signs an extension, and ideally he stays under $2M.

Probably Eager, depending on how Brown does in his next few starts.
Then again, with the Oilers injury track record, it's not like they have a hard time finding games for all these guys to play. Just need to address the problem down the middle, because VandeVelde and Arcobello really shouldn't be seeing NHL games at this point.
I agree. Eager is not effective to the club now. Because of his concussions he may not have enough truculence at this point of his career. But it might be very difficult to move him since return would be very small. Another thing we need to consider is how much Jones is asking in terms of dollars. If he asks long term I would show the exit door through trade.

I say we trade him if the right deal comes along... Out of all our bottom 6 guys he would attract the most interest from other GMs come deadline..
Most teams already have tweeners like Petrell, Eager, Belanger etc.
Hopefully Smyth retires after this year freeing up a spot for someone like Jones if we are to keep him. There is no doubt that he would be useful down the road but if Smyth stays and Jones is fighting Paajarvi\Hartikainen for a roster spot then its better to let him go.

We have just 13-14 roster spots for forwards. this team is not going to be play off team. We need to make room for more effective forwards. We will get only a pick for Jones but maybe we can use it as a part of the package and trade for Drew Stafford.
I think that Stafford can be acquired without sacrificing our first rounder. It seems that Drew is available and still has 2 years left of his contract
I hope we can resign him. Anything under 2m would be good on a 2-3 year contract. He's a good versatile forward that can move up and down the line up.
He is a fourth liner who can fill in occasionally 3rd line and in the emergency situations like injury plug the 2nd line a couple of games.
He got quite many points in the past because he got a lot of playing time in a very bad team. He should not be paid more than 1.2-1.5M and maximum 2 years. But the best solution is to trade him now since we can get something in return and get real power forward through the trade or off season UFA signing.
I think that some veterans (Whitney, Belanger) should be moved in the sake of keeping players accountable. Our veterans just don't get the job done.
