Before the summer began I thought we would have some cap issue's but Bob made it work. We have approx 2.7M flexibility and obivously Aebischer will eventually be traded during the season so aquiring a top end talent at the deadline is not out of the question. I like our roster for opening night but going into the playoffs we defientely need something extra.

I like these one year contracts. Its going to make the player work hard to get a even better contract instead of given them guarantied 3 year deals and then see those players sit on their contracts every year.

Good deal once again fro Gainey. He's put together a very respectable lineup for $42M -a couple of guys overpaid, but quite a few underpaid in comparison to some contracts. Markov's contract versus a Kubina, Gill, or McCabe. Less than a third of the cost of Chara.

I think Bob has earned a vacation - go enjoy some of the summer Bob.

$2.7M to play with when he re-signs Souray, Rivet and Markov during the season, perhaps?

If Ryder plays like he can, he'll ask for a huge raise next year.

I'm pretty he was asking much more for a long term contract. Sometimes, one year is better for both side. Ryder know that a good year would make his position stronger to negociate long term and he's probably confident that he'll be able to perform well again. It does'nt necessary make the players mad, Saku signed on long term after signing a one year contract.

Ryder might not have wanted one, if he feels he wasn't at his best next season and wants a shot at getting his long-term deal at a higher salary.

Perfect deal. If he plays like he did in his rookie year, with the cap hopefully going up again, time to sign a 3 year deal over 3 million per.

Yeah maybe. I just get the impression Ryder feels slighted. Complete speculation on my part though.

Now that everyone is signed, I was reflecting on the the salaries negotiated for this coming season (not the carryover contracts, such as Bonk's and Rivet's). Everything is relative. Some players have to be paid more than others. It's possible for a lower paid player to be more overpaid than someone who's making a lot more. I think Huet extracted more than I expected from Gainey because he had the upper hand. Still, IMO the most overpaid player is Radek Bonk, followed by Francis Bouillon.

If Ryder felt slighted, I doubt he would have accepted the contract, but that's just me.

Maybe Ryder didn't feel like getting too much of a raise (having to deal with all the pressure of a big contract) and just settled for less. He doesn't look like the greedy type. 2.2M is a lot sure of money.. Especially for a guy who was not considered a high prospect a few years back playing in Hamilton. Good for him!!

Great Great news, Gainey has finished his job of signing our players before
Aug 1st. with 2.7 million left under the cap.

We couldn't have asked for a better situation. Now Gainey has a nice vacation and were set for training camp.

Does the $2.7 million dollars under the cap include whoever our 14th forward turns out to be?

Count me as suprised that Ryder signed for so little...
With Ribeiro and bouillion both signing for just under 2 million, and looking at what the arbitrators awarded York and Briere, I wouldn't have been suprised if he was awarded closer to 3 million.

I wonder what Gainey said to him and his agent to get him to agree to this deal???
