This is fine. Halak and Elliott played for their jobs last season (if either had faltered the other would've been the starter). Now they have to play for their jobs again and there's relatively little pressure on Allen. Good move.

I agree. It could also suggest that a trade is coming. We'll have to see. Very interesting situation though.

Dump Elliott, free a contract and some money.

I'd rather see a true three way, claim your alpha role competition. They won three games in front of Allen but he wasn't spectacular. The job is wide open.

Good start.

Moves are going to have to eventually be made. With Allen up, Arnott potentially re-signing, and then once the injured guys hopefully return in a couple weeks, we are gonna have too many players and too few roster spots. Everyone should be fighting for their jobs, and nobody should feel too comfortable.

Honestly if Lehtera is smart he should come over and skate practice with the Blues ala Arnott. If he looks like he fits, trade Berglund for Giordano.

The most impressive thing about Allen's last call-up was the unexpected swagger that he brought to the net. I think because of that and because he's young the team will bust their ass for him. For a team whose psyche is about as low as it could get, Allen makes the most sense right now.

We can market it to him as an all-expensed paid vacation where he can at least catch up with an old linemate.

Doesn't Elliott have to pass through waivers in order to be sent down? If so, I assume this means he's being traded.

Can't imagine anyone -- not even Carolina or Florida -- who would even remotely think of trading for a struggling Elliott. I have a feeling tomorrow we'll find our Halak is claiming he's still injured. Which he is, but it's his mentality and not his body.

Remember last time he struggled, oh, suddenly he's hurt. Then Allen comes, gives us something to talk about, and suddenly the guy's ready to play.

Halak already said he takes the blame for the loss.

We are not going to be able to trade for an upgrade, and even if we could, we couldn't afford it.

Halak isn't moving.

It wouldn't be wise to trade him at his lowest. Unless someone said yes tonight for a trade the Blues were considering independently of tonight's performance, we'd more than likely be getting ripped off.

Allen getting called up and benching the other 2 could be the kick in the ass this teams seems like a good low risk move. Before we do anything drastic.

3-step plan:

1, this season: play the best (whatever that means) of those 3

2, offseason: buy Ells out

3, next season: let Allen light some fire under Halak ***, just like Ells did last year

Lol, really ppl saying Halak is getting moved? If Elliott doesn't get the boot before Halak I'll flip out. Send Elliott down and hope someone claims him on waivers. Let Allen push Halak, forcing him to play better.

Halak is making 4.25M this year and 4.5M next year. If none of the goalies step up and seize the #1 job, then Halak bcomes one of the most overpaid #2 caliber goalies in the league and given that Armstrong needs to make some serious RFA decisions, saving 4.5M next year might be an attractive option IF THEY DON'T BELIEVE HALAK'S THE GUY.

I agree, moving Jaro leads us nowhere.

Team play dictates play of the goalie, just look at Chicago this season and us last season. Halak is talented enough to be the guy when the team is playing great. Our team is not good enough to win the Cup if we had an elite goalie and the team plays like they are right now. So as it stands, goaltending isn't our biggest issue, it's the team as a whole.

Lack of discipline and focus.

That's fine and all, but we aren't outbidding anyone for a solid Dman or a #2 or even #3 center so where would we find a cheap, true#1 goalie who is better than him?

On the other hand, maybe something like this could go down. Calgary has a trade on the table for Kiprusoff and they execute that in conjunction with a trade of Giordano for Halak+. Blues rationale is that the goaltending isn't carrying them, they might as well plug a super-glaring hole and hope one of the two remaining guys carries them and if not, make a move in the offseason (and at least if they have goaltending on the cheap next year they might plug the D hole with that acquisition, Giordano being an example), and maybe they have Lehtera to plug the C hole.

I'm not saying this is what will happen. I don't know what will happen. Just projecting out a possible rationale for what Armstrong may be thinking. He has some big choices. We've all focused on trading a winger and/or futures but maybe the organization just doesn't feel confident in Halak's health/ability to be #1. I'm saying IF THAT HAS INDEED HAPPENED (and it's possible) then as soon as they decide that, it's a hell of a big contract to carry for a guy not carrying the team but being paid to do so. 4.25M and 4.5M are big-boy goalie salaries.
