the coming of #55

being a season ticket holder allows me the benefit of seeing the entire ice 41 times a year in person. And I can clearly state right now that we have easily a #2 d-man in Backman in the next two years, possibly even a #1 if his full potential is realized. his passing in all zones is already close to that of Prongers. he sees the ice so well and his passes are crisp and on the mark. further, his positioning is exceptional already. rarely is he out of place. his shot has improved dramatically over the past year. What Backman needs to work on is his foot speed and to get a little more physical for his size. if he can improve in those two areas we have a star defensman in the makings.

other things of note. as far as the CBA goes and lowering payroll, the Blues will resign Demitra since Backman will take over for Macinnis after he retires and that will free up 6 million dollars right there; lowering the payroll to about 54 million.

while this team is obviously having a dream season so far, in order to win the Cup we desperately need to find a scoring winger come trade deadline. while Nickulas is having a solid start, we need to find a pure goal scorer for Weight.

In regards to Cajanek, somehow we need to get him a scorer also. playing on the 3rd line with muckers does not utilize his potential. I know payroll plays a part, but Cajanek's numbers would increase dramatically with someone who could put the biscuit in the basket.

this teams future on defense is going to be centered around pronger, jackman, backman, and salvador for years to come. filling out the final three spots in the near future will be easy with khavanov, finley, baron, walker or laflamme.

we may have finally solved our goaltending situation. Osgood has been solid all year. and for me to admit this is saying something since I have never been an Osgood fan. And the good news is he is still relatively young and has at least 5 more good years left in him.

lastly, it is vital that we win the division this year as it looks like a first round matchup involving either the Blues-Wings and Avs-canucks since two of these teams will finish 4th and 5th. it would be nice to see an Avs-Wings 1st round matchup, wouldnt it??

Thanks for the encouraging words on Backman. His case shows the way to success - great drafting and patience.

How about this team in five years --

Osgood, Barulin

Pronger, Backman, Jackman, Belle, Salvador, Walker

Tkachuk, Demitra, Zakharov
Shkotov, Cajanek, Backes
Sejna, McClement, MacMurchy
King, Troliga, Mayers

... and Hemingway, Nissinen, Skoog, Bolduc, Jonsson, FitzGerald, Maiser. Also, a LW in Peoria named Randy Rowe who could develop.

The future looks bright.

And yet the Blues rank very low in terms of "prospects". Must be a reason for that...

That's something we're gonna fix.
