You hate to say that this was timely, but seriously... the timing was pretty lucky for the Rangers on this one.

Still, wishing a speedy and successful recovery to Staal. Hamrlik is a decent stopgap but nothing like the real thing.

Wasn't the claim likely put in before the Staal injury?

I miss the old days of Hamrlik feeding Phaneuf one timers. Best of luck in NY.

Oh Hamrlik and Phaneuf, wonder if those two could rekindle that magic. They'd be the Kaberle and McCabe all over again.

We've needed blue line depth for a while. This MIGHT have been in motion before the Staal injury, but we'll see.

For the record, the Rangers are 15th in the NHL, which means 14 teams passed on Hamrlik, including teams with reputations for spotty or injured d-lines (EDM, FLA, TB, WPG, PHI, STL, DAL, for instance are all thought to be looking to upgrade their blueline).

per Pierre LeBrun

Rangers had internally discussed picking up Hamrlik off waivers even before Staal's injury
So, I think Hamrlik is more of a replacement for Bickel than Staal.

He can play on one leg and be better than Bickel.

Could be a Staal thing, Could be that he's still a better option than Gilroy and Stewed Pickels

Bickel's actually played more forward this year than defense so this could be more for Gilroy or Eminger plus added depth with Staal's injury. You probably won't be seeing much Bickel, if any, at defense though.

Yes, def thinking this was more of a Bickel/depth replacement that a Staal pickup. Regardless, still shook up seeing Staal so hurt last night, wishing him all the best

Yes, plus it's been said it has nothing to do with Staal's injury. People just like to blabber here without reading anything.

No evidence that this means Staal is out a long time. They had to make the claim before last night's game. Lebrun also tweeted that they'd discussed picking him up before Staal got hurt.

Anything that means less playing time for Gilroy/Bickel is good news.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with Staal. I talked about picking him up before the game yesterday. I think he rounds out the main 6 D options nicely, with Staal in the lineup.

Dont see how it could be a potential blinding injury if staal didn't even go to the hospital last night and was only treated by the medical staff.

I wouldn't be excited, Rangers fans, really, You get a slow old player taking a lot of penalties. You never know when he's gonna fail.

Not necessarily excited. But he's upgrade over their current 6th dman options.

He lost out a battle to Tom Poti and Jeff Schultz. Don't see how is he ever an upgrade anywhere
