Now there is a really interesting story about Donetsk. As you probably know Donetsk got the right to host FIBA Eurobasket 2015 games. And at the same time the owner of Donbass wanted to build huge 20k seat arena for his club and kill two birds with one stone. So mid 2012 they chose AECOM to make a project. AECOM made some concepts but told them that throughout designing of such big arena will take at least a year, and construction will take another 3.
So as you can see there was no way they'd make it in time for Eurobasket, so they decided to build 2 arenas, one for 6k for Basketball team and Eurobasket and 20k for Donbass, with the last one being completed much later on - in 2018. But as you know Donbass made promises to KHL about their arena, so that's when KHL regulations came into play. If Donbass wants to play in KHL in the new arena, it has to be at least 12000 seater...
So the latest development is they'll build two arenas - Arena Kalmius for 12000 seats with opening in 2015, and Donbass Forum for 20000-22000 is projected for 2018-2019.
Very good decision to make it two arenas, one for basketball and one for hockey.
The Arena Stozice in Ljubljana was built for basketball and volleyball, and when they played the 1B World Championships in there, the sightlines were just awful, especially in the upper tier.
Ult, your update is very much appreciated ... Situation in Donetsk is very interesting indeed, both arenas look great!... About Kiev, I heard one of the teams in the Ukranian league was interested in KHL and an arena wasn't out of the question. Whether or not the arena decision is influnced by basketball I dont know. I read so much junk on the internet, I don't remember where I saw this...possibly on this forum?
The Primorsky region governor recently had a meeting with Medvedev where they discussed a possibility of a hockey team in Vladivostok. In the light of recent announcements by Shalaev I doubt it will be a KHL team.
New stadium for Barys, capacity of 10k. Planned to finished by the start of the next season. don't know if they will be able to build it in time, happen
That's a very very very old render, and the info is outdated.
Its from a couple months ago, they already have the location picked and the plans. I've heard rumors that the KHL wont allow barys to play in 13-14 unless it gets a better arena, so i dont know what will happen next season.

I am not sure if 13-14, but Barys must build new arena in next 2-5 years. The same Vityaz, Spartak

In that case there will be a handful of teams not participating.
Why only 10k anyway? seems short term minded. That is like the minimum one can build now. And you see teams like Nizhni building 15K's. That is the mistake Lada made. Their amount was suitable for the time they made the plans, but 10 years later(now), it is already below standard and hasn't even been opened yet.

It's not a mistake with Lada it's thiefs in action.
Nope, their officials are still struck somewhere in the mid 90s, but it is based on this.
That design looks quite cool - as does the whole Donetsk scenario thing.
Question. Obviously there's only a certain number of clubs in the KHL - so will there be a time when new arena construction just slows to a halt and teams don't need new ones for ages?

Agree completely, they will have to build a new one in a couple of years. However, I think that the problem with anything over 10k is that the arena will be half empty. Astana is not a a huge hockey town, now if only they had poured money into Ust- Kamenogorsk . . .

And still, Karaganda is getting money poured into them while Torpedo is third in KZ I dont understand why they are left only with mediocre funding from Kazzinc

Karaganda and Astana - Kazakh cities, Ust'-Kamenogorsk - "Russian" city, that's your answer.
