I remember liking Hamrlik when I was in HS in the mid-90s and he played for Tampa Bay.

It's sort of crazy to think that I'm now 33 and he is still in the league.

Can't be too many players left in the league who played in the 92-93 NHL season. Teemu Selanne is one, that was his rookie year also.

Might work. Might not.

I don't care for Hamrlik but it's mainly because of his whining about the contract negotiations. IMO he should have kept his mouth shut. That being said he's had a pretty decent career--been a good player. He's declined--due mostly to age--the question is how much? or how he'll be able to fit in with our team in the meantime? If he can manage 10-12 minutes of solid play per game then it should be an okay move.

Nice find. Would expect Staal to end up on IR soon as well.

they both played in KHL and their stats were very similar... both playing at a high level in the KHL , they just seem like a cheaper alternative than giving up assets (picks & prospects) for a quick fix. Hamrlik is a reach but it costs nothing other than a roster spot.

It's just money, the deal expires this summer and we have plenty of cap space. Maybe he's reinvigorated here or maybe we wind up waiving him ourselves in 2 weeks - no skin off our backs either way, just another option.

I'm VERY concerned about what this implies for Staal, however...

If nothing else, this will hopefully help Hartford by having Stu Bickel or Eminger down there instead of Collins.

In a vacuum, I don't mind this. He kinda sucks now, but he's still better than Stu Bickel.

Worried about Staalsy though...

I don't see the problem. I'm no Hamrlik fan, but he has a big shot that can help on the PP, he's big and he's a very solid #6

So no one in the bottom 15 of the league wanted him before us?

Guess those teams have all their defensemen in order.

What don't you like about it? We spent no assets to get him. His contract is up after this year. The money is irrelevant. Who cares?

Do you have reason to believe he'll be detrimental to the point where he will hurt us more than help us out on the ice?

I don't understand. Am I happy and excited about it? No. But I don't not like it. Jeez, he's got to be better than Bickel, Eminger or Gilroy.

Really nothing to dislike about this. I think we'd all agree he's a better option than Bickel and maybe we can avoid watching Rodin's Emmiger fight through concrete to cover his man.

He isn't good enough to play for a team at the bottom of the standings. His best days are behind him. You are not happy about it, yet, you like it?

As Bluenote just pointed out, all of those teams passed on him. I don't see him as an improvement, no. Not at this stage in his career. Eminger has been adequate. I think we will still need to trade for a depth defenseman whether Staal is out or not.

So, what does this make the defensive lineup?

McDonagh - Girardi
Del Zotto - Stralman
Hamerlik - Eminger/Gilroy

Could be worse I guess.

At 6-foot-2, 206 pounds Hamrlik is still a strong, steady presence on the blue line and can be effective if paired with a puck-moving defense partner. In 68 games last season Hamrlik averaged 19:13 in ice time with two goals and 11 assists and 149 blocks. He played in all 14 playoff games for the Caps, he averaged 22:17 per game on a top pairing with Mike Green and recorded one goal, three assists, a plus-eight rating, 20 hits and 37 blocks.

No money past this season.

Everyone healthy

Don't mind this, I thought he looked decent with the Caps in the playoffs. Adds a veteran presence to this D that no one on the current roster brings.

I just hope the reason Sather picked him up is depth, not as an injury replacement...

Solid. Should help solidify the third pair. He was serviceable in the playoffs for WAS, it seemed.

The team also has to be willing and able to take the contract

I like this move, but I hope its not related to Staal. Hamrlik means Eminger, Bickel and Gilroy are now depth. Hopefully a change of scenery will spark him...and another first overall pick in the lineup can't hurt right

Guys, this has nothing to do with Staal's injury. He was claimed before last night's game.
