Hamrlik should fit in well in NY. I just hope Staal gets back very soon. I hate seeing class act players like him injured like that. I always loved watching this guy play.

Good luck to the Hammer in NY....but Harlik in EDM would have been funny too....Hammer to Nail GOAL!

Hamrlik never seemed to fit in Washington from day one. Some teams/players just don't mesh.

Obviously Hammer isn't the player he used to be, but I'd wait to see how he does in New York before writing him off entirely.

He lost out to guys who have had NHL careers. Bickel and Gilroy are border-line NHLers at best. And there are few players that I have disliked more than Poti.

Yeah, because it's Washington's fault his skills have basically eroded.

good claim by NYR.....definitely solidifies that #6 dman spot, b/c id say hammer is a lot better than bickel/gilroy/eminger.

haha that's awesome.

Had to double take when I read Rangers after NY, was expecting Isles.

Yep, Rangers needed to get older and slower for sure.

I know this might be a difficult concept for you to understand, but sometimes a player doesn't fit into one team's system or atmosphere and then goes to another team and succeeds there. Radim Vrbata was an absolute disaster with the Lightning. Then he went to the Coyotes and has been a key player for them. It happens. I'm hardly in love with the Hamrlik pickup but I'm also not going to throw in the towel on a guy because a team that has done an underwhelming job of utilizing its players in general this season didn't find a use for Hamrlik.

You do realize we're talking about him knocking Stu Bickel off the depth chart, right?

ANYTHING that breathes and has a pulse for ****s sake is better than Stu Bickel. This includes, Tom Poti (and there's MAYBE a handful of players that I despise more than him) and Jeff Schultz.

Do you not remember Bickel during the Caps-Rangers series?

Flashed his potential in 1996. Don't know why he didn't put up that kind of numbers more often. Certainly had the talent to do so.

I mean how can anyone forget? Bickel is so good that he played a total of 5 minutes of ice time in a triple OT game.

Why all the Poti hate? I didn't know he was one of the more unpopular players in the League among Rangers and Islanders fans. Remember the nerd comment?

Anyway, it's too bad Hamrlik never did much in Washington. He was fairly good with Green at times but it's good they got rid of him when guys like Kundratek, Schultz, and Poti were playing and he was sitting in the press box with Hillen and the like. He was always pretty steady at both ends and capable of eating up a pretty good chunk of ice time. I like the claim for the Rangers but at the same time I can see it not working out. Hamrlik is pretty old and slow now but I think he's still serviceable with what the Rangers will need him for. Left-handed shot too and they needed another one of those. Might see some PP and PK time on occasion too.

Worse comes to worse he plays poorly and they let him walk in the summer. His salary's already almost all paid anyway so a good claim for the Rangers and a significantly low risk, moderate reward. They needed another defenseman, now even more with the Staal injury, which had no effect on the decision to claim Hamrlik however. They were lucky they decided to do so.

Hamrlik is disgustingly underrated. He had an excellent playoffs and was benched after four games in which half the team looked like they just picked up a hockey stick for the first time. He's slow, well, yeah, Chris Pronger was slow too towards the end. Rangers just got a two way positionally sound #4/5 for nothing.

Just because he didn't fit another team doesn't mean he won't fit elsewhere. Different styles of play, etc.

Troy Brouwer will probably trash talk him now to stay relevant.

Exactly and Dale Hunter had the Caps playing a similar style to the Rangers last year. Hamrilik was fine on that team.

He's not going to be relied on here like he was in Washington.

He's going to be a depth, #6, once Staal is back.

Staal-Girardi
Del Zotto - McDonagh
Stralman - Hamirlik

Gilroy
Eminger
Bickel

Interesting. I remember he was solid with Montreal, and I thought the signing for Washington was superb. Haven't watched enough of him, but tbh the games I have seen he was pretty brutal. Slow skating is one thing, but slow to react is what I saw and that's not good. Anyway, unenthused with eminger/gilroy monster, so im excited what the number one overall pick has to offer.

One more person between Matt Gilroy and the ice is a gain for the Rangers.

I can't speak for his time on the Rangers but the 1 year he signed with the Islanders he looked really good and a big reason the team made the playoffs.

Honestly I can't remember what kind of terms Hamerilk left Edmonton on. That might've had something to do with it.

We do have a lot of d-men on 1-way contracts right now.
