The best method of getting players the age of Gaborik is to pay the same price in assets that NYR paid.

The problem is its much more difficult to compete on the free agency front. There is both location factor & money.

It would be much easier for a team to acquire him before he's 33, and then resign him for 2 years before he has the pick of the litter.

Wouldn't location factor & money be his primary concerns as they were for his NYR signing? I would rather have a UFA who is pleased with the Ottawa location and the money.

Great post, it really puts things into perspective.

Really?

2 40 goal seasons out of the last 3, 100+ goals over the last 3 seasons and the only reason for him not making the 11 season a 40 goal one was an injury.

That's "very inconsistent?" Think before you post, Islander fan.

I'd rather see the Sens just ride this out and see where guys like Zibby, Silf, Stone, Wier, and some other recent draftees are in a couple years time before pulling any big moves.

Michalek comes in with a $4.33M cap hit ($6M in actual salary), and provides a legit top 6 scoring winger. Let's be honest, the actual salary dollars does not matter to the Rangers.

Gaborik comes with a $7.5M cap hit, and the Sens have a ridiculous amount of cap space to easily absorb that contract.

There is no question that Gaborik is the more dangerous offensive player, but seeing the cap situation, Michalek is a solid replacement, saves $3.17M on the cap, and also comes with a 3rd to sweeten the pot.

I can't honestly comment on Gaborik's defensive game, but Michalek is no slouch there, and when healthy, is a regular on the Sens' PK.

I would say that both are equally injury prone, so that is a wash.

Thoughts? Comments?

rangers arent in a cap situation next year, the way sather handles his RFAs... Hags, stepan will take two yr sweetheart deals and McD is the wildcard bc he might get a 5+ deal like staal.. but if gabs is moved it will be at the draft this year or next year trade deadline as a rental...

at the draft expect a 1st, current young roster player, and top/mid prospect for gaborik..

at deadline expect 1st, top/mid prospect/young roster player who can make immediate impact..(rd or C)

Staal makes 3.975M/year.

Rangers are not about to start a fire sale. the last one didn't last through the lock-out.

So I think Gaborik's staying put.

No thanks. Rather have: Zibanejad + 1st + Greening for a guy that scores 40 goals. You want a high scoring star it usually costs a top prospect, 1st rounder and a depth/young top 6 fwd (or a top 4 D).

Casper the ghost, sry I mean Gaborik is a streaky scorer so he'll end with a pace for 70-80 points at the end of day. Although this is a shortened season so ofc the point totals won't reach those #'s.

This is the deal that would interest me as a Ranger fan. What do Sens fans think? I know it's still steep, but are we in the ballpark?

I've loved Greening since my days in Ithaca (I saw him as a Freshman and Sophmore). I'd probably even be willing to take a second instead a first to get it done.

what else can the sens bargain with?

Spezza?- even if he wasn't injured who's Gabby gonna play with?
Regin?- doubt it
Silverberg, Condra?- doubtful
Karlsson-? he's totally untouchable

didn't the leafs for ask for a similar price for Kabarle a few years ago?
(top prospect, 1st rounder, above average depth player with immediate impact) granted he's not exactly a scoring machine but his powerplay potential is off the charts .... back then at least

I would do that trade if it was a 2nd instead of a 1st. Only problem is that Ottawa doesn't have a 2nd this year... so a 2nd in 2014?

I'd also add that this is more likely to happen (if at all) at the draft rather than the trade deadline - though that could change if the Rangers begin to struggle again and Sather wants to shake things up (and Ottawa is still sitting in the top 8).

You keep the pick, we add a 3rd if you include Ceci
Zibby - Greening - Ceci for Gaborik and early 2013 3rd (either Florida or Columbus)

No, from Ottawa

We aren't willing to give up a big part of our future.

Either take vets, or our 2nd tier of prospects

I know Ceci is an excellent prospect. I valued him at 1st and early 3rd in a deep draft, is he worth more than that?

The Rangers wouldn't do that then.

A) Gaborik sure as hell ain't worth 2nd tier prospects
B) Why would we trade one of the best vet goal scorers in the game for other, less proven vets
