great news, hopefully the team can rally together and keep it up without missing a step, staals a warrior. Wouldnt mind girardi throwing a visor on to keep himself safe, staal really dodged a bullet there it could have been much much worse.

"Following an injury suffered in last night's game vs. Philadelphia, Marc Staal was examined today in New York by Dr. Mark Fromer, ophthalmologist, and Dr. Mendel Markowitz, maxillofacial surgeon. The injury has improved significantly and both doctors are optimistic that Marc will make a full recovery. Staal will be sidelined indefinitely."

Both of the doctors list their affiliations with the Rangers in their bios

Markowitz checked Staal for any broken facial bones

Here is Fromer

#NYR Good news is Staal appears to have escaped any permanent damage, ie loss of vision. Will not require surgery, either
https://twitter.com/KatieStrangESPN/...43178438725633

Ty McGinn of the Flyers had his orbital bone broken in a fight with Mike Brown. He had surgery and is out four weeks.

http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/ey...ns-broken-face

Staal would have needed surgery for a broken orbital bone.

Lundqvist said Staal has cuts above and below the eye. Stitches. Once the swelling goes away. Remove the stitches.

I wonder if he will put a cage on for a while, & a visor once he is fully healed.

I think how long Staal is out is based on how long it takes for the swelling to subside. I would say probably a week and a half.

Most likely he will be wearing a full cage when he comes back..

I've read some comments hoping that Stall will be back by next season.

Lets clarify something right now. Out indefinitely doesn't mean long term, it just means they don't know right now. Could be 3 months, could be a week.

I think once the swelling subsides and his vision is 100% he'll start skating. Has anyone mentioned possible concussion symptoms? Because judging by the good news, that's really the only true concern he has long term.

Great news thank god

All the news sounds a lot better than I anticipated. That was scary to watch for sure.

Interesting to see last night, the first player I saw to tweet about it was Bobby Ryan in Anaheim.

It's really good to hear the doctors are optimistic. However it still sounds like there are some unknowns.

Thoughts and prayers are with Marc, just terrible. Guy's a warrior.

2 Sundays ago I got hit square in the eyeball with a shot and went down squirming on the ice just like Staal. I lost vision in my right eye for about 3 hours and went and seen an optometrist the following Monday. The doc said I suffered traumatic hyfphema. It caused bleeding inside my eye and the pressure in the eye, which normally is around 10-20 was at a 50. They gave me 4 different drops to take as well as pills that dialated and took the pressure off my right eye. In 2 days my pressure was back to normal and I'm back to taking just one kind of eye drop. I had 20/20 vision in both eyes but only have 20/40 in the right one. The doc says it will come back as the eye starts to decrease its dialating since I'm off most of the drops. I had to miss a week of work but have since returned and been released to full activity in whatever I want to do.

This isn't a "look at me" story, just I went through that looks similar to Staal, and even though the injury looked awful, it actually ended up not being nearly as bad as what it could have been.

Hoping Staal makes a quick recovery as a Pens fan. He's a great dman to watch.

Obviously him being out the rest of the season decimates out chances at winning this year, but I hope for the sake of his health that the right decision is made.

Hey guys, just wanted to send you a hearty congrats, and especially to Marc Staal.

We went through the whole thing with Manny, so any eye injury really hits home with me, and when I saw that puck hit his eye, I honestly feared the worst.

You guys are an awesome team, and Staal is an awesome player. So glad to see everything worked out okay!

I just finished watching the game and then I had to log on to HF to see what the status was on Staal. Glad to hear the good news.

It looked pretty horrific and you assume the worst.
