Never thought I'd get to see a Lions/Red Blacks game.

I don't know:
Lions
Eskimos
Stampeders
Roughriders
Blue Bombers
Tiger-Cats
Argonauts
Alouettes

Red Blacks?

RedBlacks it is.

http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=425000

Apparently the name came from Ottawa's two sporting colours, red and black. Meaning, someone probably got paid to present this idea and have it accepted as the best name for a professional sports franchise.

Wow.

Wow.

This is just like when the Bruins used to use those horrid Winnie The Pooh 3rd jerseys - just how bad were the other options that this choice was picked as being better ????

Was okay with it as a concept idea, but for some reason just not liking the name now that it's been officially announced.

I prefer the Toronto BlueBlues, or the Edmonton GreenYellows.

This has the potential to turn into a running joke all season.

Don't really see the problem. Laval and Sherbrooke use a similar idea and I've never seen anyone mocking them.

CIS is one thing, but this is a professional sports league.

I just think there should be a little more thought put into a team's name than just throwing a few colours together and deciding it fits.

Sure, one could look at the St. Louis Blues, Cleveland Browns, or Cincinnati Reds, and point out the similarities in nomenclature, but these teams either have legit reasons for the simplified name, or a long-standing history that is highly unlikely to be changed.

Ottawa has neither.

Haha I think a lot of it is just that the north american culture is so stuck in "new sports franchise? Think of an animal and pencil down a meeeaaaan drawing of that animal" or other such things, think of all the goofy drawings, is calling yourself a lion or a jaguar or a panther any less goofy then just saying you are the colors of your uniform?

It actually FEELS really strange, I know what youre saying, but in reality it makes a million times more sense than what is actually instilled in the culture.

This is true, but at the same time, imagine this:

"Hey, you a CFL fan?"

"Yeah, been a CFL fan for years, who's your team?"

"Lions! Been a Lions fan forever! How about you?"

"Gotta go with the Stamps, my home team!"

*enter third party*

"How about you, you follow CFL at all?"

"Yeah! I really like the Redblacks!"

Just sounds....weird, y'know? Don't know why they didn't stick with Renegades, or the safe pick of the Nationals, or something. Anything.

Although Ottawa itself has a deep rooted history of Red and Black colours representing its sports teams.

As I've said to other people, if this were a name 40 or 50 years old, no one would bat an eye, but it's not accepted anymore. Why that is, I don't know. Sure Browns has history, Reds has history, but what exactly makes them different than RedBlacks? Basically just age. RedBlacks, I feel, represents Ottawa far more than Renegades ever did.

Except Browns and Reds are actual words, RedBlacks is a nonsensical mixmatch of two words and a weak pretense that it's somehow a throwback to their sports history because the Senators and Riders wear/wore those colors.

Sorry, but it's ridiculous. If they wanted to do that, just call themselves the Ottawa Reds. Probably wouldn't have been a popular choice, but almost assuredly wouldn't be getting ridiculed by most people that hear of it.
