This is a the part I don't get. Why does a player who doesn't have a contract have to pass through waivers before he can play for the team that wants to sign him? What am I missing? I assume its probably something obvious as usual but this seems odd. Doesn't this hurt a players opportunity to get a contract if he doesn't have one? That doesn't seem like something the union would want. Or did the Pens sign him and then try to send him down to the baby Penguins? That would make sense but now Jersey will have to keep him up and play him or it's back on the waivers like Boychuk, right?

I think it's just so that a player doesn't just sit around all season and sign with whatever team looks like the top Cup contender come February/March, on a pro-rated deal. It's not for players like Tom Kostopoulos, though.

This is the answer. The Penguins could have signed Nonstopolous and placed him on the NHL roster with no problem, but he was to remain in WBS...so he had to be exposed to waivers.

Didn't Mark Eaton have to clear too? Maybe not.

How do you work out if someone would need to go on waivers or not?

If we had intended to send him to WBS, yes. However, he was for the NHL roster, so no waivers needed. Re-entry waivers was for one way contracts coming up from the AHL and players coming from overseas.

Suggest opening up a page with the players career stats too.

Got it. That makes sense. The stuff I read made it sound as though he signed a contract and then had to pass through waivers before he could even join the Pens which seemed strange. Thanks for clearing that up. Now I can get back to work and stop dreaming about the possibility of him taking Tyler Kennedy's spot.

Nice little parting quote:

“I just thank everyone in Wilkes-Barre. My teammates, the coaches have been great with me, the fans, even Tom Grace, helping me get back to the NHL. I appreciate it, probably even more than first time they helped me get up there.”

Zubrus has been injured. Devils sent down Butler, who was our 4RW and he was claimed.

Kostopolous gives us a better replacement in terms of what you want out of your fourth line.

They were interested in him earlier on it was reported, but he chose the Penguins for obvious reasons.

Waivers has nothing to do with one-way or two-way contracts. Never has. Never will. One-way or two-way is literally about how much a player will be paid when he's assigned somewhere. One-way is a full NHL salary no matter where you play. Two-way means you have an NHL salary number and an AHL salary number, depending on where you're assigned.

Re-entry waivers are also no longer a part of this CBA. They took it out.

Anyways, I am very pleased Kostopoulos was claimed. Nothing against the guy, but I just wish we could lose more bottom sixers with no offensive talent whatsoever via waivers but the rest are here to stay unfortunately.
