That team was atypical though, and there has been a serious league-wide talent dilution since then. Look around the league, there aren't that many teams that can ice a legitimate scoring third line. The ones that can are super-elite upper tier like the Blackhawks. Everybody else is just trying to scrape together some decent chemistry. No joke, if we had Ruutu right now we'd have one of the better third lines in the league.

I don't think it was atypical nor do I think there's a dilution of forward talent. In fact, look at all the young forwards who've jumped in and made immediate offensive impacts.

Lots of teams are looking to spread out offensive talent to create more than two scoring lines. Look at Montreal. Prust on the 1st line and Ryder on the 3rd says a lot.

Maybe so, but that's what it takes to win, and that's why your goal is to get production from your third line, rather than it simply being icing on the cake. It's one big difference between teams that advance in the playoffs and the ones that don't, so it's counter-intuitive to say production from it is unnecessary.

It's not normal to have a third line full of 45- and 50-point guys, no. Maybe immediately after the lockout for a couple teams, but the game has changed since then.

Keep in mind the Canes third line before the trades happened in 06 was no great shakes either.

I didn't say production was unnecessary. I'm saying that defining "production" is not always as simple as points on a stat sheet.

You have to take it in the context of the entire league. There are a whole lot of playoff-type teams out there right now with patchwork third lines just like ours.

Well, this has been a fun discussion.

Dwyer on JStaal line. Jussi centers Bowman, Wallace.

Brent with Sutter, Westgarth.

Muller is an idiot. Look for a big 0 points, -1, 2 shots from the blueline performance from DrayBo

I never said 45-50 point 3rd line F's were the norm. But rather it's not atypical to have good production from your third line on contending teams. Sorry, but your talent dissolution argument is simply not accurate.

Actually before the trades, the Canes 3rd line primarily was made up of the duo of Cullen and Whitney, who produced a great deal of offense.

Seems weird. The last two games were the best that our 3rd line has looked all season, maybe something is up with Nash

Apparently Nash sustained a back injury from all the pats he got here.

By that logic, Bowman should be extremely exhausted from the half-decade-long ******** he has received at the hands of many here.

Didn't see it as bickering but that's your call.

That's what a "lethal wrister" label in juniors does for you in the NHL. It buys you more time and space than you can create for yourself.

3rd line was working.

I would roll:
Jiri / Eric / Sasha
Jeff / Jordan / Pat
Jussi / Riley / Tim W
Debo / Tim B / Kevin

Is Nash injured, or was he sent down due to Brent recovering?

Michael Smith ‏@MSmithCanes

Riley Nash was sent home for flu-like symptoms, according to head coach Kirk Muller. Tim Brent remained behind to work with Brind'Amour.

Flu-like symptoms, eh?

Sounds more like he's been hanging around Skinner and LaRose too much.

Dammit, have the guys been taking up Finnish sauna parties again? I thought they banned those after the outbreak a few years ago.
