I get it and I don't. Yes, freedom is always good, but there is a lot of money and interest tied up in keeping these guys on the ice. A grandfather rule starting now with new players makes the most sense IMO. If that's not good enough, how about bonus money, like 25,000, for wearing it.

IIRC he was in his final year with the Leafs. Only thing I know is that a stick hit him in the eye and after missing some time he came back without a visor

Some guys just don't want to bother and, for the time being, that's fine. It's their choice. For a long time it was a macho thing, guys just were perceived as less tough for wearing them. That's gone the way of the dinosaur and it's obviously much more the norm to wear one now.

What I think is nutty is recreational players not wearing one. It's one thing if you're paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, let alone millions, as part of your profession as a player and something happens to your eye. But everyday people taking that risk on a regular basis, especially those in careers where your full eye site is paramount to what you do for a living, is a bit silly but that's just me. As fun as it is to have nothing at all, I always go with a visor, myself.
I've never not worn a cage.

The league went downhill the second that French sissy Plante started wearing a mask.

Yes because player safety makes it a womens league, look at all these pansies playing in the NHL today with helmets and pads and what not, what are all these women on their period?

Their grown men who agree to play a game that is dangerous and has rules to protect them. Many job have tons of safety rules and for the protection of their league they should do everything they can do to protect them.

Visors and Kevlar socks aren't exactly putting these guys in bubble wrap or taking hitting out of the game. In the Olympics players are forced to wear visors to compete. Yes these are grown men who can choose what they want and if they don't want to play in a league that forces players to wear visors then they can start their own league.

He took it too far but their is some merit. In Europe if you lose your lid and don't immediately skate to the bench It's a penalty.

Rules like that can stay in Europe.

Don't know about other euro leagues but in Germany every player has to wear a visor. I can understand the reasoning behind that and think players in the NHL should have mandatory visors.

Has nothing to do with a womans league or being soft. Just think about the business side here... Rangers pay lots of money to Staal and now he may never be as good as he once was and the Rangers don't get what they originally signed. That's ok when he has another injury for whatever reason but that injury and missing time could have been avoided by wearing a visor

thought it, just wasn't sure. Thanks.

and yes, it's true. If players lose it they have to go straight to the bench or if the helmet is next to them grab it and put it back on

Not really. That would do nothing to explain why NHLN is available with Time Warner, Cablevision, DirecTV, Dish, Bright House, etc etc.

AT&T is just too cheap to pay the subscriber fees. They had it when I had Uverse in my house SR year 2 years ago and canceled it that summer.

Lidstrom didn't get a major eye injury but I recall him getting hit in the face and wearing a visor after. Almost positive.

And I believe Yzerman did at the end of his career when he caught that puck off the crossbar that hit him in the eye. I'm sure there are more but not many. Can't think of anymore off the top of my head. Bryan Berard?

AT&T was charging 10 bucks for it as part of the sports package, isn't that enough?

I think it's ridiculous that NCAA players are forced to wear cages considering almost all of them are 18 and older.
I get it. It's an NCAA safety thing. They are property of the schools and the schools are obviously regulated by the NCAA and the schools have to insure the players. Sucks but I guess I understand it. I'm pretty the CIS (Canadian universities) allow visors, but maybe someone can confirm that.

Another thing to remember is that visors can still harm you.

I just watched Clearly get cut by his own visor the other night. If I played, I would absolutely wear a visor.

Example of how visors can still be scary:

So they weren't charging 10 for it, just for the package it was part of, no?

I dunno, I pay $8/month for the Comcast sports pack and it's the best deal ever with the amount of NHL, MLB, NFL, and Fox Soccer I watch throughout the year.

Right, but I didn't feel like you really got anything else. I've had both and much prefered the Comcast package. Nevertheless, **** them both, I hate TV companies. Pretty soon I am going to have to break down and get one and I simply cannot rationalize paying $130-250 a month.

Super Sports Pak through Rogers (my cable provider in Toronto) sounds the same - you bet NBA, NHL, MLB, and NFL and it costs $36/mos.
