You could argue that in the last year where he has not meddled or had an appointed meddler in place the club has been better off. You picked the wrong club he should sell btw.

We'll be back in the top four next season if Suarez stays. The level of play has come a long way. There were some passing moves out of the back which did not look like those of an English team. Little nervewracking but the passing against a team with relentless pressing was a joy to watch. Ultimately it is the poor start that hurt our season, and with a new manager against City, Arsenal, and United, hard to have expected differently.

While we did lose the tie, the performance was reminiscent of those in the 08-09 season, so I am happy with it.

I actually think if Chelsea take it seriously they should win this tournament, only real contenders to me are them, Benfica with the Russian sides as outsiders (I would have put Zenit as one of the clear favorites but after their performance today I question it). Its too bad Leverkusen got such a tough draw early, I think they would have been contenders

Not sure what to think of Lazio and Spurs, Lazio have hit some poor form lately in the league and might concentrate getting into the CL, same as Spurs, but with Spurs their away form in this tournament has been poor, haven't won away from home yet and were minutes away from getting knocked out by Lyon, a wonder goal saved them

I'm not sure I'm willing to proclaim a top 4 is inevitable at this stage.

Suarez should stay, but that's not set either.

Even with him, if they don't sort out the backline, they're not finishing in the top 4. At minimum, they need a top level central defender, and probably could use a left back as well. Ashley Williams need not apply. If they spend 12 on him, they're bonkers. I sadly think they have the fools in charge to do it.

They also still need a defensive midfielder, probably a third strike option, and I still think they'll look to upgrade over Downing if they have any brains. I would seriously consider another midfielder as well, but that's me.

That bill of sale is at least 30-35 million, probably more. If you move on Skrtel, it's a bit easier, but that's two defenders you have to replace.

Any Serie A followers in here that can tell me the story on Inter Milan this year as part of a preview for the Spurs match vs. Inter tomorrow?

Reading the UK papers it seems that they are a) Injured and b) Rebuilding.

Should Spurs really be favourites to go through like all the betting shops are saying?

very much in rebuild mode and not totally convincing in the league despite a come from behind win at Catania on the weekend. Spurs should be the favorites, in fact would be shocked if Inter eliminate them

I wouldn't say they're rebuliding, just broke. Look at their signings this season, anybody can play for Inter these days.

Milito's out for the season but he's already past it. Cassano hasn't played over the weekend as he's conflicted with Stramaccioni, although he's in the squad for tonight's game.

Can't see them eliminating Spurs, they're done.

Not too many interesting matchups this round, probably Stuttgart-Lazio for the early kickoffs but neither side is in great form at the moment.

Thanks HajdukSplit,

Don't really follow Serie A that closely but Inter are the biggest club left of the 16 and was wondering why they aren't favoured.

I'm fully expecting a 2-0 Spurs win today followed by an 0-1 at the San Siro to go though!

Cheers!

ps. Bit odd to see Newcastle playing without a recognized striker in the starting line up today.

Steaua have played well, will probably play in the CL next season as well, though I don't think Chelsea should panic yet. Who knows, they put out a decent team but maybe their focus is on FA Cup and will handle business at home

Only other goal so far is Lazio beating Stuttgart at halftime 1:0

They're playing like a bunch of rabid wolves. I'd rage so hard if the other team was pressuring as much as they are.

That artificial field is a better alternative than a mushed up grass field that the region could support.

How you start Benayoun ahead of Mata is beyond me. Then there is Mikel and Bertrand

Oh and take off Hazard for Marko freaking Marin while you're at it. Please Rafa, tell me how you are trying to win every game again?
