How does Rand Paul filibustering a confirmation vote actually accomplish anything? Especially when our weak/complicit media is largely washing it away as a cute "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" parody?

Like Troy said, if he actually wants to fight it, he should introduce legislation.

Paul made it clear many times yesterday that he wasn't trying to do anything but bring attention to the WH and Holder's appalling take of what they can and can't do with drones when it comes to attacking American citizens without due process.

And you say he didn't accomplish anything, well from what I have seen this morning from the news and social media he's got people talking about a very important topic. I think it's safe to say he has accomplished exactly what he wanted to do.

And he talked many times on how they - the senate - need to legislate laws into what the government can do with drones, I'm more sure he will follow through with legislation, but nothing makes legislation pass effectively than awareness, which he accomplished last night.

I ****ing can't stand the guy, but doing a filibuster on a real and important topic on the oversight of drone attacks, I think was a good thing.

You haven't said anything that invalidates my - well-founded - opinion of Rand Paul being a butthole. Congratulations for standing up - but not actually doing anything, just grandstanding for 11 hours - and talking about drones. He attached a 'personhood' rider to a flood relief bill. He is scum. Just like his father.

I'm with Lawrence Lessig.

Lessig ‏@lessig
There is plenty to disagree with Rand Paul about. But this filibuster is not. Thank you, sir.

Sure it's grandstanding, but it's grandstanding to try and ensure the checks and balances principles the US government was founded on. One of the duties of the legislative branch is to properly reign in the executive branch, and that's exactly what Paul was calling on his fellow Senators to do.

At the very least, I hope this moves the criticism of Obama onto a real issue like extrajudicial drone strikes rather than the long-tired issue of Benghazi. McCain and Graham really need to give that a rest.

So he was preventing, it's just that the amount of time he wasted in his prevention wasn't enough to bother you.

Every vote in Congress is delayed by some amount of debate, so no, I'm not bothered by a longer than normal delay. It did not matter, and it was within the rules agreed to by that elected body.

Did he, single-handely, paralyzed the institution for an extensive period of time or not?

I'd be more on his side if he was speaking about what the drones are actually doing right now.

Yes he did, and the rules of that institution were established precisely so that he could.

How long have you been a member of the ACLU? Longer than me, I assume.

Because you're not like Rand Paul, just another grandstanding narcissist, right?

I saw you peek your head in here much earlier this morning and after I posted this, took you all day to come up with post eh? And I still see you're still a *********, some things just don't change in here.

Don't worry guys, I know you have little tolerance for conservative views, I will be bowing out here soon enough.

Peace.

You didn't really answer the question. How long have you been an ACLU member?

Geez, I'm trying to find some relatable ground, and it's almost like you just want to make a cheap political point.

You are being a bit obtuse by trying to pigeonhole this into "liberal vs. conservative views". Look at the two people (in the political sphere) who are criticizing Rand Paul the hardest today: John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

Is there something wrong with pointing out the hypocrisy on the side of the left? Lurking here a few times I see its done many times towards the right.

Google is your friend.

The U.S. continues to carry out illegal targeted killings in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, and elsewhere. The government must be held to account when it carries out such killings in violation of the Constitution and international law.

Well, I guess that's kind of redundant, because Sevanston did the five seconds of work you couldn't be bothered to do.
