Except, Bloc Party are great.

Last year's Osheaga was great. I can get into Green Day. I've seen them live twice and they put on a great show. I'm one of the few who thinks American Idiot is fantastic so maybe that's why.

Beach House and The Cure will be great. Hoping for some more updates!

Kendrick Lamar is also rumoured at Osheaga.

Anyways, I don't see what everyone's complaining about. You do know that Mumford and Sons is basically headlining every other major gig in North America this summer? They put on a great show, as evidenced by Bonnaroo a couple of years ago.

Edit:

Alexandre Rochette ‏@alrochette

JIMMY EAT WORLD are playing Osheaga 2013

Agree to disagree, just my own take.

That first year's lineup was pretty badass...now Green Day, Mumford & Sons and Jimmy Eat World (if the rumors are true)? It's turning/turned into just another pop festival. Which disappoints me personally, but clearly it's working for them so far, so hey.

His music serves one purpose, for non-hip hop listeners to be introduced to hip-hop... Nothing more and nothing less. It's safe hip-hop for the new ears. I'm just not interested in listening to something that's "safe."

None of those bands are pop.

In fact one of the best bands at the fest this year, The Cure, is pop (goth-pop) but still very pop.

You don't think any of the 3 bands I listed are pop bands?

Clearly we have vastly different definitions of the term..

Or... the mainstream is trending more and more towards the Osheaga lineup? Indie pop/rock is the new Alternative, and it's all the mainstream now, isn't it?

There's an argument to be made there I guess. But if you look at early headliners, I think there was much more of a focus on what I would consider real alternative - Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Flaming Lips, etc. None of those bands were big back then or now. Obviously with more drawing power they can afford to get the big names now, but I was hoping they wouldn't go down that route.

The Pitchfork Music Festival is a good example of a festival that has a ton of "brand power" but still sticks to the alternative/indie - their headliners this year include Bjork, Joanna Newsom, Belle & Sebastien, Swans and...well, okay, R. Kelly's there too.

I think you're splitting hairs. We're talking about artists that have all sold zillions of albums, are we not? In a broad sense I think, yeah, there's not a whole lot distinguishing the three I named from the groups you named.

Looks like Rise Against could be playing at Osheaga as well. I like them, great show last summer/fall in Montreal.

Genre are always debatable, but Green Day is pretty far from Garage Rock, and they USED to be a punk-rock band, but the last 3-4 albums are pop-rock

There's no way Mackelmore will headline. You can only play one song for so long before it gets boring.

Kendrick Lamar might be worth the trip to Montreal for though.

This. Mackelmore is rap for people that don't like/understand/appreciate rap. He has some catchy songs, but people acting as if he's actually a good rapper, when in reality he has very mediocore flow, average lyrics and decent story telling skills.

yeah but at the same time, people who will go to see Mackelmore MIGHT actually get into Kendrick that night and learn what hip hop is all about

Kendrick is so damn good that he balances things out on the hip-hop side of osheaga all by himself

I suppose they can get more people through the gate with a more diverse and pop-ular lineup, though? Cater to the eclectic tastes at the same time as the mainstream? I'm not sure it makes as much sense in a short weekend festival as one of the longer ones, though?

They have such a good and accessible venue there, though, you'd think Montreal could support more than Heavy MTL and Osheaga, if they picked a couple more weekends and stuck to genres a bit more? Or does that already happen and we just don't hear about the others as much?

I hope that's what happens with Macklemore listeners. The problem is that I fear a lot of them will simply go "this doesn't sound anything like Thrift shop" and go about their day.

I'd love to see Jimmy Eat World, Two Door Cinema Club and The Cure. I'd also watch Green Day... they always put on a good show!

If you think about it, both those festivals are still relatively young. For a while it was pretty arid outside of the Jazz Fest. Now there's those two plus Pop Montreal and Suoni per il Popolo off the top of my head (thinking of festivals that are exclusive to Montreal and not touring festivals like the Warped Tour, Gigantour if they're still doing that, etc)...we're much better off than we used to be, that's for sure.
