Sergei Samsonov

Assets Is speedy, extremely creative, very hard to knock off the puck and excellent in one-on-one situations. Has smart offensive instincts, and displays surprising grit and a fine work ethic as well.
Flaws Tends to hang onto the puck too long from time to time, trying to make something happen out of nothing. His lack of size will always be a concern, since he's prone to serious injury.

Career potential First line left-winger.

Yes! And by a fair margin...

I'd try a Samsy-Koivu-Kovalev line...Zednik couldn't pass for the sake of **** so that's why this line wasn't working too much. Samsonov can playmake and is really fast.

He's an upgrade over last season's version of Zednik, anyway.

Beyond that, you have to decide whether you think his flash and skill is more or less important than the bit of size and go-to-the-net dimension that Zednik used to bring to our mix of mostly-smaller forwards (and at almost half the cost of Samsonov).

Yes and it IMO, is not as close as many seem to think it is...

How many times has Zednik spoiled a decent scoring opportunity for the habs because he CANNOT pass the puck. His eyes are very one tracked, and even then, he doesnt have a pure enough shot to compare.

In Sammy, we have a truly skilled player, who is able to do all the things our MOST TALENTED players do in similar fashion. Pass, shoot, score, skate...

You can bring up Zedniks feistiness, and nose for the net, but they have been missing for a long time in his game. He simply does not have the killer instinct he showed in that Boston series. Hes not nearly as deadly as people think he is... and if anyone really wants to wonder why Koivu has gone through a few 10 + game goal scoring streaks... its because he does not worry about goals, AND he played with a player that has nearly no puck control in Zednik.

In Samsonov, we keep the goal scorers touch, add speed, and add passing ability. He was absolutely deadly against us in the playoffs against Boston (he was often the best B on the ice, like their answer to Zednik, and eventually their answer... period).

Add to this, the fact that Sergei will be playing with a player he has potentially the most chemistry with since he joined the NHL, and I honestly think its a no brainer...

Samsonov over Zednik.

Clearly an upgrade, especially over last year's zednik and probably anyways, he's got much better passing ability speed and can finnish equally as well as old zednik

. Here you show us zednik stats but you dont even mention samsonov stats At the age of 27 samsonov has more goals and points than zednik whos 30. Not to mention that samsonov is entering his prime at 27. So yes samsonov is an upgrade any way you look at it. And this while sergei is a suposeably a player whos prone to injury

Of course Samsonov is the better player.

Do you think for a SECOND that Gainey would of just let Zed go for a medium pick if he was important for us? It's not only logic, but its not like we we gave away a PF and got a natural scorer instead, they are in the same class, only Zed is starting to look like a dropout. And saying stuff like he wasnt happy playing with our youngsters, OUT. Those guys are way better than him and our future stars.

Cancer...

edit: isn't it also funny how Zed and Bulis left in tandem again? They are like Voltron... SERVED!

I think Samsanov is a substantial upgrade over Zednik. He adds more creativity, puck control, and the biggest area he upgrades over Zednik is his ability to keep defenders back on their heels and open the ice up for his teamates.

Zednik was one dimensional. When he was on, he was good at what he did, but that was all he did and he wasn't always on.

Samsanov is also younger and I belive his best is yet to come as the NEW NHL is built for a player with his tools.

Zednik wasn't working on our team, with our setup. That's not to say that he won't do well on Washington with Ovechkin (heck, who wouldn't). But Samsonov with Kovalev is a definate improvement then Zednik with Kovalev. Samsonov is more of a playmaker, it's what we need.

Considering Bulis was on the top 2 lines last year and not Zednik. It's Bulis spot Samsonov is taking anyways and that is a hell of an upgrade.

With that been said, Samsonov is good enough of an upgrade over Zednik also...

I believe Sammy is a tremendous upgrade over Zed Version 2005. Don't get me wrong. I would never knock Zed but Sammy is head and shoulders better. To me it's a no brainer...

Exactly. If you take the formation of the lines at the end of the year, Sammy replaces Bulis and is a tremendous upgrade, and Johnson replaces Zednik and is a tremendous upgrade also IMO. In brief, we are far better than we were, not even close.

I think some are missing a very valuable asset to Sammy's game.......he is a much better team guy than Zed or Bulis. Not that those guy's were headcases, but they did sulk from time to time.....Sammy has always been called an upbeat guy in the dressing room and a good team player. Add to that his obvious skills, yeah he's an upgrade.
Johnson is Bulis's replacement and he's a better player aswell.
