I'd hope the Leafs wouldn't help the Rangers out by taking that albatross contract off of their hands.

Bingo.

I highly doubt Nonis has any interest for Brad Richards unless it's for a soft Phaneuf type trade.

It would be pretty funny, and fitting, for the Rangers to buy out Richards so early in his decade long contract. I have no idea how that team can keep signing big free agents.

So much for "living with the tragic decision".

Horrendous reality for us. I haven't a clue why we're not some miserable group of sad-sacks who haven't seen the playoffs since the first term of the Bush administration.
oh man, whats up dude!

when reading my posts there are two things you'll need to remember

1. I am a Leafs fan and as such have an elevated sense of humour and so plant your tongue firmly into your cheek!

2. Life is too short to lose your water over a game, smile, be happy and never ever sweat the stuff you cannot and will not ever control.

Do some people know how to read? Read the MOU. The NHL and NHLPA agreed to change how long term contracts are handled in the new CBA. Not surprising considering this board was so pro-NHL during the lockout. The Rangers will buyout Richards by June 2014. Its only money. Don't cry for Richards. He got $20M in one calendar year.

If the Rangers are definitely buying out Richards no matter how well he plays, why not buy him out this off season?

If you wait until the 2014 off season and he gets injured, then he can't be bought out and they're pretty much screwed.

And who do you propose we replace Richards with. Miller won't be ready.

Stepan and Richards are a good 1-2 up front. Richard won't be bought out. He's an important piece.

By the 2014 offseason maybe there's a replacement available that isn't a cap disaster.

I don't believe it's a far gone conclusion that he WILL get bought out in 2014.

I believe that that is going to be predicated on how he plays over the rest of this season the 2013 PO's, the 2013-14 season and those PO's.

Yes, the Injury issue is a legit concern, but that's a concern that can be remedied by placing him on the IR.

The more important issue is HOW Richards plays over the rest of the year, next year and PO's.

That is going to determine the course of action the Rangers take.

Maybe I missed this part...

How do the Rangers resign McDonagh, Stepan, and Hagelin this summer without using a buyout? Someone do the numbers and show me how its done.

Looks to me like Richards is a free agent again this summer.

They could potentially move Staal and maybe get away with it.

Cap hit waived Buh-Bye

Then you can have him for free.

Isnt it fun living in a fantasy world where you get to use monopoly money?

You keep Richards so you have the honor of spending millions to buy him out? Just to save 1/2 the cap hit? Thats insane.

Trade him if some team is dumb enough to take on that contract. Richards is almost 33 years old if he aint shot now he will be 2 years from now I guarantee it.

Take back Komisarek if you have to . Anything.

The trade option was KIA when the league and NHLPA agreed to the Cap recapture issue.

Richards has played 2 years on a 9 year deal. Next season 13-14 will be a 3rd season.

If he retires 4 years after that, the Rangers will have massive dead cap space on their roster for 2 years.

I believe the Rangers would much rather perfer the buyout option than the dead cap space.

Should he continue the poor play for the rest of the year and PO's for both this year and next, he gets bought out.

Who loses? No one. Richards is a rich man that can go and sign where he wants and the Rangers get to move on.

This is as close to a no lose situation as you can get.

http://www.capgeek.com/rangers

Rangers have 10.9 million available to spend this summer.

2.75 for Stepan - Bridge Contract unless he signs an offer-sheet
2.25 for Hagelin - Bridge Contract unless he signs an offer-sheet
4.5 for McDonagh - Long term contract

Actually, I'll guess they will keep Richards this summer, as well as those other players you mention, but Richards will probably be bought out next summer, Torts and him have to break off their bromance first.

Hahahaha, a proven #1 center vs a guy who has been considered a bust until this year.
Hey no argument from me, we keep the proven player, you keep the flash in the pants.
