Kulemin + Gunnarsson+ for a strong defensive defensemen

The Leafs really need a defensive defensemen to play with Phaneuf because Holzer is getting burned constantly and really doesn't belong in that role.

Kulemin is a great defensive winger with streaky scoring ability, he does a lot of things that go unnoticed and I like him, but the Leafs are going to have a logjam in the wing and if a trade happens I see him as the most expendable guy who has value.

Gunnarsson is probably the Leafs 2nd best defensemen, I'd really be open to trading any of the Leafs defensemen not named Phaneuf or Gardiner but I think Gunnar would probably be most appealing to other teams. He's pretty strong defensively and decent offensively (9 points this season), but for whatever reason Carlyle has been reluctant to try him on the top pairing.

I'd be willing to add any non-1st round picks and any prospects not named Rielly, and of course if there are any teams out there that want Komisarek or Liles the Leafs wouldn't hesitate to add them.

Who do you think is the best defensive defensemen the Leafs could target? Would Dan Girardi be an option if Staal comes back healthy?

Leafs need a #1 center much more than a defensive d-man, especially with a backlog of d-men already, and Gunnar is one of our better d-men

...unless you think Calgary would go crazy and trade JayBo for that package

Carlyle would love to get his hands on Beauchemin again, but I don't think Toronto can afford him.

We aren't serious contenders anyway, but ya, he'd work.

I remember when Leafs fans and media trashing Beauchemin and running him out of town

He didn't make much sense then. He was better used as a tradeable asset. Things change. We can still make the playoffs although I highly doubt, short of Reimer going Halak that we do any damage, but the experience would be good for the players and the fans.

That's probably the strongest argument for Anaheim to hold on to him, and Toronto to wait.

Gunnarsson & Kulemin are two of our most under-valued players

We would never get the value back if we traded them both away.

Agree that the Leafs need another top pairing dman but it has to specifically be someone who plays the right side.

Carlyle has played Dion on the left side all year and wants all of his D to play on their strong side. This has created a log jam now and down the road because all of Phaneuf, Gunnarson, Liles, Fraser, Gardiner, Rielly and even Ranger (if he signs) are also all lefties.

Just to throw some names out there:

Bieksa
Michalek
Wisniewski
White (free agent)
Polak
Niskanen
Robidas

If the team was willing to give up a lot more than what the OP offered:
Gudbranson
Bogosian

Quality RD are hard to come as 2/3 of all D are left shoots.

I really, really don't think you would want to add Wisniewski with the goal of stabilizing your defense.

Leafs have a lot of defensemen yes but we can only play one guy next to Phaneuf. Having a bunch of #3-6 defensemen does not change the fact that the Leafs need someone other than Phaneuf capable of playing on a top pairing. Gunnarsson was that guy last year but for whatever reason Carlyle doesn't want to play him with Phaneuf. Gunnarsson is one of the Leafs better defensemen absolutely, but you've gotta give to get. If the Leafs could get an upgrade on Gunnar the defensive core would be looking real good. Having one need doesn't mean you should neglect another so #1 center doesn't really have anything to do this unless a #1 center is being traded for Kulemin + Gunnar (which they won't be).

Polák would be tough to get from the Blues, but I wouldn't say he is 100% unavailable.

Gunnarson (LD) for Polak (RD)?

The Leafs have depth on the left side and need help on the right side to play over Kostka or Holzer. Polak is signed for 3 more years at 2.75 per. Gunnarson is stuck behind Phaneuf and soon Gardiner, Rielly and possibly Ranger on the left side.

The Blues need a LD capable of playing 20 minutes and Polak is stuck behind Piet and Shattenkirk on the right side for years to come. Gunnarson is an RFA at the end of the year and should come in around the 2.75 Polak makes.

Thoughts?

That package will only happen for a RH dman.

Phaneuf-Holzer
Gardiner-_____
Fraser-Franson

We need Gards in this lineup.

We desperately need a good D for Phaneuf.

I love Carlyle but I just don't get how you can bench Liles and have Gardiner in the NHL when Holzer and Kostka are on the team.

Holzer is a 5-6, Kostka might be a top 4 but his offense is terrible.

The Leafs are a team commited to youth, trading picks in this draft for anything other than youth goes against that commitment. Also, we couldn't add another D without moving a roster D.

Polak is on a team friendly contract. Better than Gunnarson and as tough as they come. Love to have him though

I wouldnt move Bieksa because he is an orignal canuck draft pick and do not like moving career guys after they put in so much effort for the team for years and years.

But if he wanted to be a Leaf, I would do so

I am ball parking this trade value because I have never considered trading Bieksa before.

Toronto

Bieksa

Vancouver

Bozak

Gunnarson

2nd 2013

2014 2nd and I'd do it. We might even be lower in the standings next year anyway
