I haven't seen much either, but judging from the other night, the defense is doing just fine. Didn't see any glaring breakdowns or anything, Rinne just had a really awful night. It's the other end of the ice that's their problem. I usually HATE saying stuff like this, but if there's a team that honestly needs to tank, it's this one. They need a star in the worst way.

Why can't we scout a better dman than the ones we have now or a good bottom 6er in Europe? Could make a huge difference to this team. Are you really saying that the best dmen in Europe are worst than what we have on our blue-line now? No way, especially some of the ones who have some past NAmerican ice experience (27 year old dman Ryan Gunderson on Brynas for example who's a small 27 yo dman but is one of the leading scorers in the SEL the past 2 seasons for dmen and is surely better than Hunwick based on a couple games I saw during the lockout).
I remember Dater answering a question I sent him a few years ago regarding the Avs' European scouting, and he said the Avs had actually increased their European scouting in recent years. Don't know if this is still the case, but there's no reason to think otherwise. I can't help but think though that Lacroix has politely asked Pracey to put more of an emphasis on North American players though--I think that just because Lacroix himself had some pretty notable misfires with highly regarded European prospects (Kuleshov, Nederost, Johansson). Just conjecture on my part.

I don't think the Avs are really missing out on too many players that could help right now, and I'm one of those who is not a big fan of management right now. They've actually tried a few Euro vets (Lindstrom, Kolesnik, Hlinka) and none of them worked out.

Rumors starting to swirl that Bozak is going to command 4-4.5m. Not surprising as that is where I pegged him on the open market.

He's not going to be worth that. Anything over $3M is overpayment. The only thing he does above average is faceoffs. He's a 35 point center in any normal situation.

The Leafs are already busy overpaying Lupul that much (oh, they are going to regret that, just you watch) so maybe they do the same with Bozak.

I agree, but someone always seems to overpay on the UFA market.

Well he's the 2nd best two way center in the last 25 years, of course he's going to get that kind of money.

Good news for Ducks. Getzlaf is a good fit there.

I generally like teams keeping their talent.

And the market is now set for #1Cs... $8.25m. No more cap circumvention to lower the numbers. Be prepared to start seeing elite 2nd liners making $6m like ROR

Nick Kypreos ‏@RealKyper
Not confirmed but the number I heard last nite was in the ball park of 66M over 8 yrs. Aav of 8.25 for #ducks Getzlaf.

Never in a million years is Getzlaf worth $8.25mil, they must be banking on the contract looking better once the cap grows in years 5-8.

Perhaps Stastny will be traded after all. He'd surely command $6M/year going forward.

Wait a minute. According to some people here he must be worth that because somebody was willing to offer that kind of money to him.

This is exactly what happens when you can't circumvent the cap. Without the circumventing years Brad Richard's contract would be a cap hit of 9.5m. First line NHLers are going to have high cap hits moving forward.

It amazes me that we just had a half season lockout where owners complained about player salary and then we get contracts like these given out.

O'Reilly isn't worth 5mil, he was worth 4-4.5mil, but he could at least perform up to a 5mil contract between this and next season.

Getzlaf just got paid as the 4th or 5th best player in the league.

Cap hit wise, but not really. His contract is less than Parise, Suter, Richards, Kovie, etc. The cap circumventing is over with these deals.

Doesn't really matter in terms of whole dollars, those guys will possibly be making millions less than Getzlaf in 8 years. All that matters is the here and now cap figure (salary per season for them).

It's still ridiculous, circumventions years or not.

All I am saying is that you cannot compare the cap hits preCBA to postCBA. The rules are different and don't allow you to put in stupid final years that makes them artificially low. Getzlaf is now the standard bearer for solid #1Cs.

When you breakdown how the Richards deal would have looked in the new CBA you would have a 6 year $57m deal.

I'm happy we got to enjoy Forsberg and Sakic before the cap. That way we just got to think of them as players and didn't have to go "Forsberg is good, but he has a cap hit of $9M".

Eklund:

"With the Ducks playing so well it is hard to imagine they will make a move at all, but when I talk to people in the know they tell me that Cory Perry is the player more likely to remain in Anaheim next season and that Getzlaf is very much "on the fence."

"Update: Getzlaf signs an extension in Anaheim."
