8.25 cap hit. Thats an overpayment IMO. Perry will probably get 9.

But but but... Toronto..!

But in all seriousness, holy hell is that a lot for him!
I was thinking $7.25M max

Negotiations with Perry were probably not going too hot, then

I'm not sure what their internal cap is (or if they still have one) but they still have 19 million in cap space for next with this contract.

Ducks didn't get owned. Getzlaf might not be worth that to teams like the Penguins or the Hawks, but to the teams that NEED a #1C, he's definitely worth that.

Hopefully he can stay healthy throughout his whole contract.

$8.25 is a bit much. I was expecting maybe 6.5-7

Steep price IMO, tough to keep Perry now unless they have a boat load of kids ready for big minutes.

thats not really overpayment. other free agents that have signed in the past 2-3 years would have had cap hits that high if they didnt add on the retirement years at the end of the contract to bring down the cap hit.

I expected $7.5 million a year, so this isn't too surprising. But it definitely sends a message, that if any team wants to sign Perry, the market's been set. And it's a sure thing that if Perry leaves, he is leaving money on the table.

That's a big chunk of change. Wow. Seems like it's too much, but he's really important to that organization.

And Leafs fans all over Canada just shed a tear. For what Getzlaf brings, the Ducks had to make him one of the highest paid players in the league. They had him for a bargain with his previous cap hit.

Perry to the Leafs (E5)

All jokes aside. Would love for the leafs to take a gigantic stab at Perry. Good for Getz to get the extension, hes played really well this year after pretty much doing a bed sh*tting last year.

The cap amount is not really surprising now that teams aren't signing players for their years in their late 30s which lower the cap hit substantially. Parise, for example, averages $10 million in the first 8 years of his contract.

I'm not sure if he's worth that much, but I'm happy for Anaheim and their fans for being able to keep him around. Good for them.

Well, it do sound like a lot of money especially since it is so long term. But if there is one player you should "overpay" for it is your #1 C.

Leafs have Komisarek and Liles in the pressbox, combined similar cap hit. I rather invest the money in some one special like Getzlaf.

Good luck to the ducks. Perry next?

I love Getzlaf but he doesn't deserve that much money considering his production has been declining overall; he had all the leverage and Anaheim had to keep him but still....

These are the kinds of deal that hurt everyone in the NHL except the guy under contract

Not a fan of the deal AT ALL

Holy hell, that's Crosby money. Crosby of the West?

He's still a great player to have on any team but I really hope he doesn't decline too fast since he does play more physically than other skill centres such as Thornton, Malkin, etc.

Still really surprised, thought 7.5 would be the absolute max -and even then I thought that was high.

Yes it is an overpayment but then again who is going to ask for big money soon ? It isnt like it matters if they overpay for their stars.

This is not overpayment...this is similar to other UFA deals without the garbage years tacked on at the end.

Zetterberg was getting about $7.5M the first 8 years.
Kovalchuk was around $10M the first 8 years.
Weber is over $10M the first 8 years.
Richards is at $9.5M the first 7 years.
Parise/Suter are at $10M the first 8 years.

Getzlaf is getting less from this deal than Richards/Parise who I think are good comparables. The fact is he is 27, and he will still likely be an effective player at the end of the deal. The new CBA worked, the cap hit is around his actual value.

Fair market value (Eric Staal makes the exact same. They are comparable players). Good for Getzlaf, I would assume that means Perry will be moved.
