Only 1M - 2M overpayment to keep a big powerforward RH 27 year old center who has 402 points in 395 games in past 6 seasons? Non-Ducks fans just jelly, good for Anaheim keeping their star.

He is a true #1 C in this league. Over the past 5 years...even with the bad year last year, he has AVERAGED 82 points. Say that again...AVERAGED 82 points. Only 5 player had more than 82 points last year...and that is his AVERAGE. And he is only 27. AND I am sure his agent went in saying....you had him at 5.3 mill the past 5 years...so he was underpaid. Time to make up a little of that $.

Ask yourself, what is a PPG, big Center at age 27 worth compared to others?

Great news for Anaheim.

Doesn't matter if he's being overpaid a tad bit. You got your captain re-signed and that's all that matters.

The guy had 11 goals last year in a full season, now I am not saying that will be the norm and he should be good for 70~ points a season, but $8.25 is a lot of money, and maybe he would have got this kind of payment on the open market but he certainly didn't give the Ducks any discount. If they have to sign Perry for the same kind of money they could get themselves into real cap trouble, don't they still have an internal cap?

Glad to see he will be staying a Duck though.

I imagine if Getzlaf's signed this, Perry has an identical offer(or at least very close) and it's all on him. And with this signing, I think it's come to a head, either he signs this month or he's gone.

Franchise centers don't come cheap. For people that actually watch Anaheim, he has played like one of the best players in the world.

Lots of money, but an other team would have spend it to get him. I guess the Ducks had no choice. Big skilled centers are also a rarity.

It worked for the owners. Under the old CBA, he would have made the same in the first 8 years (or more) but tacked on garbage years at the end to bring the cap hit down, meaning the team would be able to spend much more than the cap.

I dont think he's winning another cup in the near future but of course a player in Anaheim or California is not gonna leave for a more pressuring market. Today's players are wimps and like comfort.

You're comparing his contract to pre-lockout deals. This most certainly is market value. It's a market value contract without the extra years added to cheat the season.

If the Ducks didn't sign him, who do you expect them to sign to replace him?

#1 Centers don't just grow on trees.

Check out his pts/game 5 out of his last 6 seasons excluding that 11 goal one...

This isn't overpayment. It's market value.
2006–07 Anaheim Ducks NHL 82 25 33 58
2007–08 Anaheim Ducks NHL 77 24 58 82
2008–09 Anaheim Ducks NHL 81 25 66 91
2009–10 Anaheim Ducks NHL 66 19 50 69
2010–11 Anaheim Ducks NHL 67 19 57 76
2011–12 Anaheim Ducks NHL 82 11 46 57

Now don't get the wrong idea, I think Getzlaf is an awesome player and definitely a quality first line center but I can't justify such a big payday for a guy who simply hasn't produced at an elite level in the last 3 years.

The real issue I have is that contracts like these hurt everyone: now it's going to be a comparable for other players but if it happens that those players haven't had bad years in the last three years of their older contract they are going to be able to command HUGE cap hits.

People comparing this to Crosby are pretty damn funny

Getzlaf wanted market value. He easily would have gotten this as an UFA

Very plausible to sign Perry, but there would have to be quite a few low end contracts in the mix.
If they sign Perry to around the same contract (lets 9 for math sake ) they have just over 10 million for They other UFAs are: Selanne(4), Koivu(3), Lydman(gone), Lovejoy(525,000). Their RFAs are: Palmieri(2), McMillan(1), Beleskey(800,000).

It will be tight but not impossible but it looks like they will have to lose at least 1 of Selanni,Koivu,Lydman to do it.

11 players made more than 8.25m this season. At least 25 players make 7m this season. Caphit does not equal salary and this is especially true in the long term contracts signed before this CBA.

Zetterberg was getting about $7.5M the first 8 years.
Kovalchuk was around $10M the first 8 years.
Weber is over $10M the first 8 years.
Richards is at $9.5M the first 7 years.
Parise/Suter are at $10M the first 8 years.

Getzlaf is getting less from this deal than Richards/Parise who I think are good comparables. The fact is he is 27, and he will still likely be an effective player at the end of the deal. The new CBA worked, the cap hit is around his actual value.
Great post. This to everyone that is saying over payment. Great for the Ducks to get him locked up. They had to. I am stoked. He is a beast and only 27 y/o.
