The new CBA results in higher cap hits for stars, not lower. Can't add on years to bring it down.

Most likely market value in the new market. For the old market, his salary is actually still a very good deal, and that's what's more important than the cup number to the Ducks. I did hope for $1M less, but the Ducks didn't really have a choice. Had to keep their captain, best player, and top line center.

Very, very small chance Perry will stay now, IMO.

These types of deals are the new norm. Better start getting used to them. Good for Anaheim for keeping their star center.
Very true. Better get used to seeing 'higher cap hits' even though the money is, in many cases, lesser.

You might want to take a closer look at Getzlaf's numbers. His form is closer to a 90 point pace.

Fair deal, even a tiny discount all things considered. Most of the top players with recent front loaded deals: Parise, Suter, Richards, Kovy are actually making more than him. When you consider it's 12.8% of a 64.3 cap for your best player and that will still go up the next few years due to NHL revenue growth eventually outpacing % players will get, it really is a very fair deal for both sides.

These type of cap hits with new cba will start to be the norm for the new line of elite free agents hitting their primes: Perry, Giroux, Toews, Kane instead of the front loaded deals of Brad and Mike Richards, Hossa, Luongo, Kovy, etc of the last CBA which are no longer possible.

I know. Without the lock out its 66mil spaced out over 16 years for a 4.125mil cap hit.

He's already averaging over a point per game this season; last year is looking more and more like an anomaly.

Especially when that #1 center happens to be right handed, 6'4, and your captain.

I actually think the cap hit is about right. He has the same hit as Eric Staal, the two players are actually pretty similar.

Agreed. He definitely would've gotten this or more in the open market.

It's great that they got him re-signed, but I can't help but think they overpaid. They had the advantage of offering him an extra year of security and keeping him where he wanted to be, yet they still made him a top 5 paid player in the league. At the end of the day though all that really matters for fans is that he'll be there a long, long time.

To make players' cap hits better reflect their actual salaries.

As others have said, if Getzlaf had signed a year ago, he would've signed the exact same deal plus three or four BS years at the end to drop the cap hit. We had the lockout mainly to keep that from happening, and if this deal is any indication, it's working.

You were expecting Getzlawl to get just a bit more than Travis ".3PPG" Zajac?

It's good for the Ducks to have him long term just I think he should be making 1 million less a season. In the 8 range is for players like Crosby and Malkin IMO.
so you ignore the other 4 years when he was over a PPG player?? Players can have a bad year sometimes.

over paid, but the Ducks need him more then Getz needs the Ducks.

Had to do it. Now the cap hit limits them significantly.

I don't like the deal. This year Getzlaf is playing great. Last year he looked disinterested and floated for many games. Duck fans were not very happy with his play.
This kind of money is too much for Getzlaf. He's a level below the top players based mainly on the fact that he was inconsistent last year. A deal in the $6.5 million range for that long of term would have been closer to market, IMO. Hopefully for the Ducks they get this year's Getzlaf and not last years.

I like getzlaf but after how terrible he was last season makes this a massive overpayment.

And for those people saying it's comparable to the Richards and Parise deals, those are terrible contracts too.

Would he have gotten the same on the open market? Yes

Did Anaheim have any other choice ? not really

He's still not worth it.

fans want a salary cap, there are significant side-effects to that.
Exactly. You will see Malkin do the same. RFA's like Pietrangelo will also end up with higher cap hits than they previously would have. Star players will get similar amounts of total money over less years making harder to keep teams together.
