Somebody will, and I doubt it will be the Ducks.

I could see the Leafs signing Perry to a mega deal in the off-season and deciding to less Kessel go into free agency after next season. They certainly have the money to do so, and I believe they have the cap space as well.

I would love to have Getzlaf, but that's a hell of a contract. Might not be that awful if the cap continues to grow.

Darcy should've traded Roy + Adam + 2nd for him while he had the chance.

Tonight's games of interest for the draft

Winnipeg vs Florida - Hope for a 3 point game. Do we want Winnipeg to win and just assume Florida will finish behind us, or do we root for Florida?

Edmonton vs Nashville - Go edmonton!

Chicago vs Colorado - End the streak Colorado!

Calgary vs Anaheim - Go Flames!

I'm rooting for Winnipeg to get two points in every game. They have three (3) 2nd round picks. I want them to waste one of them on Regehr.

As a young team, I doubt they will trade them. 2nd rounders are a high commodity nowadays - especially in this draft.

Plus, can they trade the 59th pick since it's compensation? We haven't seen compensation in the NHL in a while so I have no idea how that works.

Not positive on the bolded--JFB can chime in, though--but I don't understand why they wouldn't be able to use it as they see fit. It's their asset, if they choose to spend it on another asset they believe will enhance their team, they should be permitted to do so.

Also, I think their ownership/management want to give Winnipeg a playoff team, and if they're flirting with a playoff spot, they'll make moves in an attempt to make the top-8. Regehr makes some sense for them given their putrid PK.

They can trade compensatory picks if they want.

I think the last time it happened was Wisniewski to MTL:
Quote:
The New York Islanders have acquired from the Montreal Canadiens their compensatory second-round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft as well as a conditional fifth-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for defenseman James Wisniewski.

The Canadiens acquired the compensatory pick after not signing their former first round pick, David Fisher.

For a guy with only 2 80+ point seasons and isn't even at a ppg for his career, he is pretty overpaid with this contract. Paying a guy 8.25 until he is 36 is pretty bad idea. I'm hoping we can re-sign Vanek to a contract that pays no more then 6.0 a season.

What a HORRIBLE contract, especially considering the new CBA. With the old CBA, I might expect it. But now? Crap on a stick.

Basically every long-term contract being signed nowadays looks awful, it's just the new standard.

I'm not sure about that. I think the cap is going to start climbing very quickly again after next season.

Big, power center who can put up 80+ points in a good year going to UFA? What are people expecting?

His hair alone should've brought the cap hit down to 7.5.

Not a top four cap hit, although it's harder to bring down the AAV now, so we'll probably see more of this.
Eric Staal basically got the same contract a few years ago and has the same cap hit but Staal will be younger when his expires.

It's too much, but all of these contracts are too much.

Still, holy cow.

yea, people don't seem to realize that the CBA didn't change players value, it just changed the team's ability to minimize the cap damage

Here's what Brad Richards got over 8 years at 31 yrs old:
58 million
Here's what Ryan Getzlaf got over 8 years at 27 years old:
66 million

I think Getzlaf is worth 1 million more per year than Richards... don't you?

That contract is soooo much better than LOSING Getzlaf to Free agency and having it set your franchise back...for a long time

At what point would an overpayment outshine that? Max salary for ten years?
