This is why I hate Selke voting. If you base this on nothing but the voting, Kesler is the best defensive player since the 2005 lock-out, and I think we all can agree that isn't the case.

He's one of them, I think we can all agree on that. Selke is a joke in general, though.

Many of them have already been picked. Just restricting myself to typical 4th line defensive centers: Craig MacTavish, Troy Murray, Doug Risebrough, Derek Sanderson, Red Sullivan, Steve Kasper and Bobby Holik. Kessel is just as talented as these guys (well, maybe not Sullivan and Sanderson), but he just hasn't had that kind of career yet.

But yeah, there is one undrafted defensive center who I would definitely take ahead of Kessel if I was in the market. I'll point him out when he comes along.

Wouldn't that be Datsyuk?

Kesler can also play RW which increases his value some.

I really have to stop calling him Kessel.

I was not aware of this outside of the PP. How often has he played RW at ES?

Doesn't Datsyuk have better Selke finishes than Kesler as well?

Also, when searching the Boston Globe in Google Archives, you can chip away at the small snippet they show you by putting the last part of the snippet in quotations and then searching for that. That usually reveals at the very least the full sentence.

His first couple of seasons before he was really established as a player, he played a lot of games at RW. Also the entire 08-09 season when Sundin was a Canuck Kesler was his RW (and played awesome, might I add...a lot of us wanted him to move to RW so Hodgson could take over 2nd line C).

Well, I'm not sure where he'll play, but Pavol Demitra is joining our squad.

He may play either wing on our 3rd or 4th line. He'd got a strong offensive resume, has two-way ability, and plays all forward positions. As a nice bonus, he was the leading scorer of the 2010 Olympics.

Billy picks

D Bob Armstrong

4x Top 13 Norris Trophy Voting(7, 8, 9, 13)

We feel he will be the perfect compliment to Kevin Hatcher, bringing a strong Norris resume despite the fact that he was an almost exclusively defensive defenseman.

Mike Richards

5x Top 10 SHG(1, 1, 3, 5, 10)
2x Top 8 Selke Voting(2, 5, 7, 8)

We're going to do something a bit unorthodox with Richards, he'll be playing the left wing for us. It's near impossible to find a LW with a proven track record as a penalty killer and good defensive player without being a black hole offensively, so we're going to switch Richards. He has played LW on a number of occasions, most famously in the 2010 Olympics on a line with Jonathan Toews and Rick Nash. He also played some left wing on the Kings last year. We aren't expecting Richards' offense to translate fully to wing considering his playing style, we just want a guy that isn't a non-factor offensively.

Quote:
Burnside: There was some discussion that perhaps Richards' stock had fallen as his Flyers have struggled, yet he remains one of the top penalty killers in the game and will be asked to bring his strong two-way play to the Olympics.

Quote:
Richards is more than willing if they choose to give him a look on the flanks.

“There’s a lot of skill. A lot of people are going to have to play different positions,” he said.

I’ll do whatever I can to make the team. Just try to show what you can do and what kind of situations you can be put in and help out the team in.

Quote:
Not only is Richards no longer playing center, he's paired with Kopitar on the top line with Dustin Brown. Coach Darryl Sutter put Richards at left wing last Saturday and is expected to stick with it for Monday's game against the Colorado Avalanche.

Richards played wing during the 2010 Winter Olympics. The only drawback is that L.A. doesn't get to use Richards as much on faceoffs.

"To me, it doesn't matter where I play," he said. "Obviously I'm comfortable at center, but … it just takes a little bit to get your positioning on the ice. A couple of plays happened in (Saturday's) game where it was a lot different with the board battles, but you get used it after a period, two periods max."
http://www.nhl.com/ice/blogpost.htm?id=5302

We also think he is definitely a better center than Toews and Kesler, but at wing, it would be up for debate.

If JFA hasn't picked when I check back here in about 20 minutes, who wants my list?

Kesler has shown himself a better Bottom-6 forward than Henrik Sedin has a top-6 forward, and Ryan was one of the best Canucks in their Stanley Cup Finals run.

He has awed many in the hockey world with the high quality of his play in Round 2 against the Nashville Predators. It has left little question that the Canucks so-called second line centre is among the best overall players in the game today.

His last two outings, in particular, will go down as among the greatest back-to-back playoff performances in franchise history. He is an early Conn Smythe candidate.

On Saturday night, Kesler's singular determination to bring his team back from a 4-2 disadvantage against the Preds was reminiscent of Mark Messier in his prime. A wonderful skater at the best of times, Kesler seemed to be in a gear no one else could match.

I would say he was their best skater that playoff year, even without giving him credit for playing injured.

True and I am torn on Kesler because I admire his grit playing hurt, but he also put in some great diving performances.

I'd say he even rivaled Sedin.

And I don't admire that so much.
