quite sure Mr. Getzlaf has had about 5-10 similar or even better offers in the last months, so its a fair deal

Lets say Perry goes to FA.

Who would take Perry at 7 years x 66.5Mil or 9.5AAV.

Who here would take Perry on their team at that cost???
I know the Jets won't because that's not the teams strategy but I would love it if they did. RW is our weakest position.

Top spending teams would have trouble fitting that in, but up and coming teams looking to make a splash could make it work.

Do you mean from other teams? You know that would be tampering right?

They weren't going to spend the money in his raise otherwise. I don't see the big deal in this case, being that they are not a cap team.

It looks like he has his game back on track, but what was wrong last season? Only 57 points.

In any event the deal is market value for a big #1 center, who for every season other then 2 has scored better then a PPG pace. Players like him don't come cheap.

Indeed. Any other team talking to Perry & Getlzaf before UFA would face loss of 1st rounders.

Sure is a lot of money but ANA really had no choice other than to let him walk and that just isn't an option if you really think about it. There are a handful of teams in the NHL right now that are in desperate need of a legit #1 center so Getzlaf would have easily sign a similar deal in the off season. I expect Perry to sign a similar deal soon.

Good signing by the Ducks. While there wasn't much of a discount to be had, it's a fair cap hit for such a rare player.

It's going to take some time for all of us to adjust to the cap hits of non cap circumvention deals.

Big deal for a player who gives inconsistent effort at times.

Let's look at it this way.

If that $8.25 was valid this year for both of them (Getzlaf and Perry), they would still be $2.8M under next year cap.

Looking at it another way:

If Perry signs for the same amount, they would have $11+M of cap space with 16 players signed for next year.

It can be done.

Good for Anaheim to lock up Getzlaf.

Look, there's no more cheat contracts. A lot of star players are getting $10M per in actual salary. This is the new normal. You can't compare his contract to those signed pre-lockout.

While Ducks fans can breathe a sigh of relief now knowing their captain will be with them for the foreseeable future, 8.25 million a year dollars is an extraordinary figure.

To put that in perspective: Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each make 8.7 million annually while Steven Stamkos makes a meager 7.5 million. Does Getzlaf rank amongst players of this caliber?
Stopped reading right here when it became apparent the author had no actual clue what the SALARIES of said players were as opposed to cap hits. It's bad enough people on HF don't get it but that's shoddy work for someone trying to be a journalist. Yay for being fast getting an article out though

Crosby's SALARY (not cap hit ) over the same 8 years : 12M, 12M, 12M, 10.9M, 10.9m, 10M, 9M, 9.6M.

So no, he's not making anywhere near what Crosby does. This is also why Malkin won't be taking the same cap hit as Crosby on his next contract - it will be dramatically higher.

wow that is a lot more money than I would have expected. Simply because the cap is going down. Good on Anaheim for locking him up though.

8 years AND a huge AAV? I don't know, I would have gone 5 years at 8.25 or 8 years at 6.75-7 ish. Just seems like the Ducks caved on both money and term.

I guess that's why he bothered to show up this year. That's gross overpayment for a guy who has taken non-contract years off and supposedly wants to stay in the area for family reasons; Not to mention the cap coming down.

It could be worse for the Ducks I suppose. They could have lost their franchise center for nothing. Hopefully they can keep Perry too but this sets a REALLY bad precedent for his deal.

Well. Their salary is eventually equal with the cap. The cap is an average of the salary.
